General operation.-In Fig. 8, the carriage comprises bars 18, 20, 22, 24 running the length of the machine supported by members 14 on bosses 16; one set of bars carries donning means 32, 34 for holding empty cops and the other set doffing means 26, 28 for gripping full cops. A doffing device for a spinning &c. machine comprises a resiliently loaded lifter pivoted to swing towards and away from the axis of the spindle and which can pass in contact with the full cop when moved in one direction parallel to the axis, but will engage and lift off the cop when moving in the opposite direction. Brackets such as 30 extend the whole length of the machine and are carried by members 24 on a shaft 10 which can be raised and lowered as described in Specification 908,981. For each spindle, the upper bracket has a cap-holder 25 and the lower bracket a lifting member which in the form shown consists of two flaps 38 on rods 36 urged downwardly by springs 40 against stops. When the device is lowered, the flaps open as they pass over the full cop until they close beneath a shoulder 43 to grip the cop, which is then raised as the device is lifted.
