The present invention is a filtering flow guide for hydrothermal reaction vessels--such as crystal growth apparatus--which improves crystal production efficiency and crystal quality without significantly slowing down flow velocities or crystal growth times. One embodiment of the flow guide fits inside a conventional hydrothermal autoclave for crystal growth, and includes at least one central inlet conduit by which crystal nutrient solution flows from the autoclave's dissolving zone into its growth chamber. A plurality of funnels encircle the inlet conduit, the funnels contiguous with each other along their lateral edges and with the inlet conduit's intake opening at the funnels' innermost edges. Each funnel may be substantially shaped as a hollow, inverted triangular pyramid with a nadir instead of an apex, the nadir opening into a filter-containing outlet. The inlet conduit, plurality of funnels and outlet tubes guide the flow of crystal nutrient solution optimally through the autoclave's dissolving and growth chambers, producing an even flow rate and pattern, and reducing wasteful crystal deposition. The inlet conduit, the funnels, or both elements, may further include optional filters positioned to enhance convective solution flow with minimal flow impedance. The flow guide thereby also filters out contaminants, producing high-purity, high-perfection crystals.

A method and a device for continuously removing slag from electric and reverberatory furnaces having deep slag basins, which are used for melting ores, concentrates, roasting residues and agglomerates of nonferrous metals. An inclined channel passes through the furnace wall, and the lower end of the channel is located inside the furnace at the depth of the quiet slag layer, while the outer outgoing end is at the level of the slag surface inside the furnace and is located on the outer side of the furnace. The slag is removed from the slag basin through this channel, running off through it with a velocity of flow lower than 10 cm./sec. The runoff of the slag from the depth of the quiet layer, combined with the low velocity of outflow through the inclined channel and the slow motion of the slag upwards-in a direction opposite the action of the sedimentation forces of gravity, provides a reduction of the loss of metal with the slags. The constant level of the slag inside the furnace stabilizes the thermal conditions of the furnace. The low velocity of flow of the slag through the inclined channel and the invariable thermal loading of the refractories reduces the wear of the latter.

A magnetoresistive read sensor with improved sensitivity and stability is described. The sensor is a trilayer stack positioned between two electrodes. The trilayer stack has two free layers separated by a nonmagnetic layer and a biasing magnet positioned at the rear of the stack and separated from the air bearing surface by the stripe height distance. Current in the sensor is confined to regions close to the air bearing surface by an insulator layer to enhance reader sensitivity.

A guide map is created for use in placing a spectroscopic single voxel in a region of interest in single voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy. An anatomical planning image of the region of interest is obtained through MRI. As a spectroscopy voxel is stepped across the region of interest, characteristics of the magnetic field used in the MRI are measured at each location of the imaging voxel, and a guide-FWHM map indicative of the homogeneity/inhomogeneity of the magnetic field over the region of interest is derived using the measurements. The guide map is created by overlaying the guide-FWHM map on the anatomical planning image. A spectroscopic single voxel of a size corresponding to that of the spectroscopy voxel is placed within the region of interest as per the guide map. Then spectral data is acquired from the region of interest confined to the single voxel.
