The present invention provides a method of producing a polymer hydrogel comprising the steps of: (1) preparing an aqueous solution of a water soluble polysaccharide derivative and a polycarboxylic acid; (2) optionally agitating the solution, for example, by stirring; (3) isolating a polysaccharide derivative/polycarboxylic acid composite from the solution; and (4) heating the polysaccharide derivative/polycarboxylic acid composite at a temperature of at least about 80° C., thereby cross-linking the polysaccharide with the polycarboxylic acid. The invention also provides polymer hydrogels produced by the methods of the invention.

The methods include gel synthesis, swelling of a gel precursor with a first nonaqueous reactive material, and encapsulation of the swollen gel with a second nonaqueous reactive material. Gels precursors may be synthesized from crosslinking polymers, or alternatively, may be formed by crosslinking and polymerizing a monomer starting material. An accelerator may be utilized to facilitate swelling of the gel precursor with the first nonaqueous reactive material. Foams and composites may also be swollen with the first nonaqueous reactive material. The swollen gel is then contacted with a second nonaqueous reactive material such that an encapsulation layer is formed thereby. The encapsulated gels may be stored for subsequent use. The methods further include release of the first nonaqueous reactive material encapsulated within the gel under conditions which compromise the integrity of the encapsulation layer. The released first nonaqueous reactive material is then reacted with a nonaqueous reactive material, the reaction product being a useful product for a variety of applications such as coatings, adhesives, sealings, caulking, laminating materials, electrical coatings and the like.

A dielectric loaded superconducting linear accelerator (linac) (10) is disclosed which includes an accelerating structure formed of a cylindrical sapphire crystal (14) having a centrally disposed passage (16) for reception of a particle beam (18) to be accelerated. A superconductive material layer (12), such as niobium, surrounds the exterior surface of the sapphire crystal (14). When the linac (10) is operated at a superconductive temperature of less than 2 °K, the loss tangents of the sapphire and niobium are very low so that the linac operates very efficiently. The uniform shape of the sapphire crystal (14) insures that wakefields generated by the charged particles as they pass through the linac will be minimized. The linac has a very high Q which enables it to store energy over a long period of time and reduces peak power requirements.
