Methods and compositions are provided wherein microorganisms are used to alter the interface of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-coated surfaces to increase oil recovery, for improved bioremediation and/or to benefit pipeline maintenance. 1. A method for altering the wettability of a hydrocarbon coated surface comprising:a) providing a hydrocarbon-coated surface; [{'i': 'Shewanella', 'i) a cell-containing medium comprising one or more sp.; and'}, {'i': 'Shewanella', 'ii) a conditioned medium which is substantially cell free and which has been in contact with one or more sp.;'}, {'i': 'Shewanella', 'wherein the sp. comprises a 16S rDNA comprising SEQ ID NO:21, SEQ ID NO:23 and SEQ ID NO:28; and'}], 'b) providing a medium selected from the group consisting ofc) contacting said hydrocarbon-coated surface with the medium of b) wherein the medium alters the wettability of said hydrocarbon-coated surface.2Shewanella. The method of wherein the hydrocarbon-coated surface is a component of a terrestrial surface formation or subsurface formation comprising elements selected from the group consisting of rock claim 1 , soil claim 1 , brine claim 1 , sand claim 1 , shale claim 1 , clays and mixtures thereof.5. The method of wherein the subsurface formation is an oil well site comprising at least one production well and optionally at least one injection well.6. The method of wherein contacting is achieved by pumping the medium into the production well or the injector well.7.
