A diol composition comprising 95% by weight or more of a diol selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 2,3-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,2-pentanediol, 1,3-pentanediol, 1,4-pentanediol, neopentyl glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,7-heptanediol, 1,8-octanediol, 1,9-nonanediol, 1,10-decanediol, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polytetramethylene glycol, 2-methyl 1,3-propanediol, 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol, 2-methyl-1,8-octanediol, 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,2-cyclohexanediol, 1,4-cyclohexanediol, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,3-cyclobutanediol, 2,2,4,4,-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, hydrogenated bisphenol A, isosorbide, isomannide, isoidide, hydroquinone, resorcin, dihydroxybiphenyl, naphthalene diol, dihydroxybenzene, and dihydroxytoluene and impurities in an amount sufficient to cause the diol composition to have an electrical conductivity of 0.6 to 30 mS/m. The diol composition may be used in the production of a polyester material having a reduced thermal weight loss rate and improved mechanical properties and molding stability.
