An actuator can translate the surface in space with at least one degree freedom of movement to influence movement of one or more droplets on the surface. In one embodiment, the surface is patterned with areas that attract the droplets and interstitial areas that repel the droplets to enhance transport of droplets. For example, for water-based droplets the attracting areas can be hydrophilic and the repelling hydrophobic. In one embodiment, the repelling areas are superhydrophobic. Electromechanical movement of the surface avoids expensive and complex microfluidic fabrication and components, and avoids electrowetting requirements.

A determination is made as to whether the one or more transaction completion criteria associated with the user account are met with respect to the first device, the second device, and the transaction request. Based on a determination that the one or more transaction completion criteria associated with the user account are met with respect to the first device, the second device, and the transaction request, the transaction request is completed. 1. A method comprising:receiving a transaction request from a terminal device, at a processing device, initiated with respect to a first device, a second device, and a third device associated with a user account, the second device being a non-electronic device worn by a user;retrieving, from an account repository stored on a storage device, one or more transaction completion criteria associated with the user account for the transaction request, the transaction completion criteria indicating that at least three devices are required to be present for the user based on the transaction request exceeding an amount threshold;receiving, as part of the transaction request, an image of the second device captured by the terminal device; 'determining that the second device is associated with the user account based on the captured image of the second device and a stored image of the second device as previously associated with the user account in the account repository; and', 'determining, by the processing device, whether the one or more transaction completion criteria associated with the user account are met with respect to the first device, the second device, a third device, and ...

In this disclosure, transition and rare earth metal-based magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) are successfully prepared in a two-step synthesis and used to extract viable bacteria from a liquid sample. The disclosed MILs are extremely hydrophobic MILs and were insoluble in aqueous solution at 0.01% (v/v). Furthermore, these MILs were miscible in a variety of polar and non-polar organic solvents. Moreover, these MILs possess low viscosity and increased magnetic susceptibility. These MILs possess unique characteristics that can have great potential uses in various chemical applications such as extraction solvents in LLE, liquid electrochromic materials (Co-based MILs), and novel reaction media for organic synthesis.

A method for lignocellulose conversion to sugar with improvements in yield and rate of sugar production has been developed by using ionic liquid pretreatment. This new pretreatment strategy substantially improves the efficiency (in terms of yield and reaction rates) of saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. Cellulose and hemicellulose, when hydrolyzed into their sugars, can be converted into ethanol fuel through well established fermentation technologies. These sugars also form the feedstocks for production of variety of chemicals and polymers. The complex structure of biomass requires proper pretreatment to enable efficient saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components to their constituent sugars. Current pretreatment approaches suffer from slow reaction rates of cellulose hydrolysis (by using the enzyme cellulase) and low yields.

A general purpose hearing aid amplifier is programmably adaptable to the prescription requirements of the hearing impaired. The hearing aid amplifier comprises a bank of bandpass-restricted channels, each channel having a voltage-controlled input amplifier, a voltage-controlled compressor, and a voltage-controlled output amplifier for shaping the gain, attack and delay characteristics of the selected channel. The bank is fed through a fixed high-pass filter from a microphone input, and a mixed output drives a power amplifier for an output transducer such as a hearing aid speaker. The amplifier is programmably adaptable through the use of a monolithic programmable switch array using, for example, semiconductor fuseable link technology to preset digital-to-analog converters voltage controllable levels of the amplifiers and compressors of each channel according to a digital control input. The monolithic switch array is coupled to the programmable amplifiers through digital to analog converters which establish the programming voltages for the amplifiers and compressors. The monolithic switch array digital to analog converters may be constructed on the same monolithic semiconductor chip.
