The solar concentrator may include a prism assembly placed to separate solar radiation angularly by wavelength to facilitate use of single junction photovoltaic cells for increased efficiency. The heat sink may form the major structural element of the solar concentrator. 1. A light pipe used for backlighting liquid crystal displays has a planar front surface and a stairstepped or faceted back surface. Light is injected from the ends of the light pipe from cold or hot cathode, apertured, fluorescent lamps. The cold cathode lamps are preferably insulated to raise their operating temperature. The back surface has a series of planar portions parallel to the front surface connected by facets, which are angled so that the injected light reflects off the facets and through the front surface. A reflector having a planar, highly reflective, highly scattering surface or a sawtoothed or grooved upper surface is located adjacent to and parallel with the light pipe back surface to reflect light escaping from the back surface back through the light pipe to exit the front surface. The axis of grooves is preferably slightly skewed from the facet axis to reduce moire pattern development. A low scattering or loss diffuser is located adjacent to and parallel with the light pipe front surface to reduce moire pattern development. The liquid crystal display is located over the low scattering diffuser. A separate injector may be located between the lamp and the light pipe to better couple the light into the light pipe.

Multiplexed display element sequential color LCD panel

In a color sequential system using LCDs, the LCD must operate faster than the frame rate because red, green, and blue are done sequentially. Ferroelectric LCDs can do this, but they are not analog devices and so cannot provide analog display levels. Instead, a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is used. In the system of the present invention, each pixel has three storage devices to hold RGB analog levels. A latch is used to load these values in parallel. Then an analog 3:1 multiplexer is used to select the proper storage device for the current sequential color. The multiplexer output goes to a comparator, which has a sawtooth waveform input at much faster than the frame rate. The comparator output changes with the sawtooth level, so that PWM control is provided for each pixel. As an alternative, standard analog LCD pixels can be sequentially switched between three color input storage devices.

The invention provides a nitroreductase, obtainable from a bacterium having the following characteristics as exemplified by examples isolated from Escherichia coli B and Bacillus amyloliquifaciens: 1) it is flavoprotein having a molecular weight in therange 20-60 Kilodaltons; 2) it requires either NADH or NAD(P)H or analogues thereof as a cofactor; 3) it has a Km for NADH or NAD(P)H in the range 1-100 νM; and 4) it is capable of reducing either or both nitro groups of CB 1954 and analogues thereof to a cytotoxic form e.g. the hydroxylamine. The sequence of one such nitroreductase is shown in Seq. ID No. 1. The nitroreductase may be conjugated to a tumour targeting agent such as a monoclonal antibody and used to convert prodrugs into active antitumour agents. Such prodrugs and drugs are also provided.

An "extra-folded" projection display system includes a selectively reflective material (e.g., a linear reflecting polarizer) placed immediately behind the system's imaging screen. The display system includes an image projector that projects an image beam containing light of a predetermined linear polarization toward the imaging screen. The linear reflecting polarizer reflects the light in the image beam away from the screen. The reflected image beam then encounters a 1/4-wavelength achromatic retarder which converts the linear polarization to circular polarization. The image beam next hits a mirror that reflects the light back through the 1/4-wavelength achromatic retarder, which converts the circular polarization back to linear polarization, with the polarization director rotated 90° from the original polarization director. The linear reflecting polarizer then allows the light to pass through to the image screen.

A light projection engine uses a wide angle reflecting polarizer material (preferably 3M DBEF brand double brightness enhancement filter) as a polarizing beamsplitter to direct polarized light to beam splitter/combiner (such as an X-cube dichroic reflector). The beam splitter/combiner then splits the directed polarized light into separate reflective LCD panels acting as light valves. The LCD panels alter the polarity of the incident light from 0 degrees up to 90 degrees to control which light is passes from the wide angle reflecting polarizer back towards the light source and which light has the necessary polarization change to allow it to pass from the wide angle reflecting polarizer to the lens system. After reflecting off of the LCD panels, the light goes back through the X-cube dichroic reflector, where it is recombined. The recombined light which is of a first polarity is transmitted from the reflecting polarizer to the lens system, while the recombined light which is of a second polarity is transmitted to the light source. The LCDs are preferably analog polarizing LCDs.

The stand supportable on the surface has rotational points rotatably supporting the module so it can rotate about a first axis of rotation. A first drive disposed on the stand is operable to provide first rotation, and a cable connected between a hoop pulley of the module and the first drive on the stand can rotate the module about the first axis to direct the solar collector(s) toward the sun. The solar collector(s) disposed on the module can be photovoltaic cells for collecting solar energy. A second drive on the module can rotate an adjacent solar collectors on the module using pulleys and cable. Reflectors on the collectors can focus the sun rays to photovoltaic cells. The second drive can rotate the collectors about a second axis, carried by the first axis, to direct the solar collector(s) toward the sun.

The invention provides a nitroreductase, obtainable from a bacterium having the following characteristics as exemplified by examples isolated from Escherichia coli B and Bacillus amyloliquifaciens: 1) it is flavoprotein having a molecular weight in the range of 20-60 Kilodaltons; 2) it requires either NADH or NAD(P)H or analogues thereof as a cofactor; 3) it has a Km for NADH or NAD(P)H in the range of 1-100 μM; and 4) it is capable of reducing either or both nitro groups of CB1954 and analogues thereof to a cytotoxic form e.g. the hydroxylamine. The sequence of one such nitroreductase is shown in Seq. ID No. 1. The nitroreductase may be conjugated to a tumor targeting agent such as a monoclonal antibody and used to convert prodrugs into active antitumor agents. Such prodrugs and drugs are also provided.

In the projection system using a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display (PDLC), polarized light is used as the light source onto the PDLC. The reflected light maintains its polarization, while the scattered light from the off pixels of the PDLC randomize the polarization. The polarized image is then passed through a polarizing filter which eliminates half of the scattered light, whereas practically all of the polarized image is passed onto the display source. In this way, the contrast between the on and off pixels is effectively doubled.

A client is arranged so that at power up it makes a request to a server for first boot code which allows the client to boot from its own mass storage. Since the OS is not sent from the server over the network, traffic flow is eased whilst strict control of client software type is maintained. The configuration of a client may be checked prior to software, particularly OS, installation by a server. The server, detecting a new client on the network, down-loads scan code onto the client. The client then runs the scan code and returns hardware configuration data to the server. If the OS of the client is to be modified then the server sends different, second boot code to the client which instructs the client to boot (a new OS) directly from the server. The OS from the server is then installed on the client mass storage device, and subsequent IPLs take place using the first boot code.
