A high tensile tape or cable is sewn into pockets in the arms of a flight suit. The pockets are closed over the tape or cable by a frangible thread. A non-frangible thread secures one end of the tape or cable to the wrist of the flight suit. The other end of the wire or cable is secured to a fastener that is adapted to connect to a ring member in the aircraft. The ring member is fastened to a tape or cable wound on a haul-back reel in the aircraft seat. Upon receipt of an ejection signal, the haul-back reel winds the tape or cable rupturing the frangible threads securing the pockets in the arms of the flight suit. The tape or cable pulls the arms up and against the chest of the air crewmember.

A fuel injector (10) is provided for each cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the injector including an electronically operated control valve (146) disposed between supply passage 42 and a timing chamber (98) to control the admission of fuel into and out of the timing chamber. A primary pumping plunger (62) and a secondary plunger (90) are axially spaced within the central bore of the injection body, and a normally closed injection nozzle (14) is situated at one end of the injector body. A mechanical linkage (27, 28, 30) associated with the camshaft of the engine drives the primary pumping plunger (62) against the bias of a main spring (18). The timing chamber (98) is defined between the plungers (62, 90) and a metering chamber (128) is defined between the secondary plunger (90) and the nozzle (14). An electronic control unit (52) responds to engine operating conditions, and delivers a timing and metering signal to the control valve (146) to close the valve and seal the timing chamber for a controlled period of time. The sealed timing chamber forms a hydraulic link, so that the plungers (62, 90) move in concert during the injection and metering phases of the cycle of operation. When the signal from the ECU is terminated, the control valve opens, and breaks the link so that the primary plunger (62) moves independently of the secondary plunger (90) which is biased in a set position by a spring (96) after termination of the control signal. The timing function can be adjusted by the ECU relative to any preselected position of the crankshaft to optimize engine performance, while the metering function is achieved in a proportionate manner relative to the degree of camshaft rotation. A cam (22), having a linear portion, controls the mechanical linkage, and thus the primary pumping plunger (62), to produce the proportional metering function.

An air bag (10) is stored in a compartment (22) at the side of a vehicle seat. The bag (10) is clamped to a manifold (42) extending along the bag length. A housing (44) holding an expansible gas is disposed within the manifold (42) and is isolated from the manifold (42) by a diaphragm (66). A rupturable container (77) holding particles of a pyrotechnic material (46) is disposed in the housing (44). Ignition of the pyrotechnic material (46) causes the container (77) to rupture before the combustion of the material (46) is completed. The partially combusted pyrotechnic particles combust in the housing (44) and transfer heat to the gas in the housing (44) to expand the gas. This causes the diaphragm (66) to rupture, thereby providing gas flow to the air bag (10).

Abstract: PRESSURE-TIME CONTROLLED UNIT INJECTOR A fuel injector (10) is provided for each cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the injector including an electronically operated control valve (60) disposed between supply passage (4 2) and a timing chamber (80) to control the admission of fuel into and out of the timing chamber. A primary pumping piston (62) and a secondary floating piston (72) are axially spaced within the central bore (70) of the injection body, and a normally closed injection nozzle (14) is situated at one end of the injector body. A mechanical linkage (27, 28, 30) associated with the camshaft of the engine drives the primary pumping piston (62) against the bias of a main spring (18). The timing chamber (80) is defined between the pistons (62, 72) and a metering chamber (82) is defined between the secondary piston (72) and the nozzle (14). An electronic control unit (52) responds to engine operating conditions, and delivers a signal to the control valve (60) to close the valve and seal the timing chamber for a controlled period of time to form a hydraulic link so that the pistons (62, 72) move in concert during the injection and metering phases of the cycle of operation. When the signal from the ECU is terminated, the control valve opens, and breaks the link so that the primary piston (62) moves independently of the secondary piston (72). The timing function can be adjusted by the ECU relative to any preselected position of the crankshaft to optimize engine performance. The metering function is controlled by the pressure drop across a restricting orifice (98) in the passageway feeding fuel to the metering chamber (82). The flow rate through the metering orifice is proportional to the square root of the pressure drop across the orifice.

An inflatable air bag is folded against a seat belt that is secured around the waist of a vehicle occupant and is enclosed by a tubular webbing. Upon a sudden deceleration of a vehicle, the air bag inflates and takes an L-shaped form, comprising a torso section, a waist section, a lap section and a rearward protrusion extending from the upright portion of the L. The waist section bears against the occupant and pushes him back into the seat whereas the torso and lap sections push the occupant back and down into the seat. The method of folding the air bag determines the deployment sequence of the sections. A deflation member releases the pressure in the airbag a predetermined time after its inflation.
