An upper respiratory bacterial infection is detected from exhaled mammalian breath by using a colorimetric sensor array having a spectral response characteristic that changes when exposed to bacteria-produced analytes in the exhaled breath. A urine test for diagnosing lung cancer has been developed that uses an artificial nose such as a colorimetric sensor arrays to identify metabolic profiles in urine headspace gas. Cancer cells excrete unique compounds that are a byproduct of their metabolism. The compounds are excreted through a patient's endocrine system by filtration through the kidneys and other organs and are ultimately excreted through the urine. Some of these cancer cell by-products excrete in the urine are small volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Once the urine has exited the body, these VOCs may be outgassed to the environment. Experimental research has determined that a colorimetric sensor array as disclosed is capable of reliably identifying patients with lung cancer based after exposure to the VOCs of the urine headspace gas. 1. A method for determining an indication of whether a patient has cancer comprising:exposing an artificial nose to the headspace gas from a patient's urine sample; anddetermining an indication of whether the patient has cancer based on the response of the artificial nose to volatile organic compounds contained in the headspace gas from the patient's urine.2. Process for the biological treatment of organic wastes, of the type comprising a first anaerobic digestion phase and a second aerobic digestion phase in succession, a filtration phase of the solid substance being provided after the two digestion phases, furthermore comprising a separation phase of the biogas released in said anaerobic digestion phase and a nitrogen recovery- phase from the exhaust gases rich in ammoniac substances separated from said aerobic digestion phase. The solid substance coming from each of said filtration phases is separately returned to the respective digestion phase, while the liquid phase coining from the filtration phase downstream of the anaerobic digestion phase is sent to aerobic phase. In the nitrogen recovery phase the gaseous current consisting of said exhaust gases rich in ammoniac substances is treated with a solution of carbonic acid supplied in countercurrent in a first gas/liquid contacter to obtain a mixture of nitrogen salts (ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, etc.).

The derivatized starch may be hydrolyzed, particularly enzymatically hydrolyzed by at least one endo-enzyme. In addition, the starch may be cationically modified with a low degree of substitution. Use of such starches is novel and advantageous in that they are compatible with polyacrylic acid, providing a clear, solution with a stable viscosity. Further, the resultant composition provides a clear film which is not tacky, good stiffness, and improved humidity resistance.

The production of hydrocarbons and pure water by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis includes stage(s) to separate the water and hydrocarbons and water purification stage(s) involving contact with an adsorbent. The adsorbent is chosen from activated carbon, hydrophobic clay or its derivatives and hydrophobic zeolite or its derivatives. Preferred Features: Between separation and purification there is a stripping stage using steam or inert gas. This stage operates at 0.02-10 MPa and 60-210 deg C. The adsorbent operates at <= 50 deg C. The amount of water treated per hour is about 5 times the mass of the adsorbent. Two adsorbent beds are arranged in parallel. One is used while the other is regenerated. The zeolite may have a silicon/aluminum molecular ratio \- 20. After the purification stage(s) the water percolates through a bed of bacteria and/or activated sludge. Finally the water is exposed to air, mineralized and gasified with carbon dioxide at <= 0.5 MPa also produced by the synthesis.

Method for performing digital subtraction angiography of a region of interest of a patient, wherein, with a contrast agent being present in blood vessels of the region of interest, a filled image data set (1) of the region of interest is acquired by x-ray imaging and an angiography image data set (4) is created by subtracting a mask image data set (3) from the filled image data set (1), whereby an x-ray imaging device (6) for x-ray imaging and a further imaging device (7) for at least one additional imaging modality, wherein the imaging devices (6, 7) are co-registered and operable to acquire image data in the same field of view, is used to simultaneously acquire the filled image data set (1) using the x-ray imaging device (6) and an anatomy data set (2) using the further imaging device (7) and the mask image data set (3) in derived from the anatomy data set (2) in a conversion process, which converts additional imaging modality image data into virtual x-ray image data.

The starch may be additionally hydroyzed particularly enzymatically hydrolyzed. Further, the starch may be modified using ionic substituents. Further, the resultant composition provides a clear film which is not tacky, good stiffness, and improved humidity resistance.

Prodn. of ethane and propane is effected by hydrogenolysis of a feed comprising 4-20C paraffins and/or naphthenes at a temp. of 100-500 degrees C, a total pressure of 1-120 bars, an LHSV of 0.1-100 and an H2/feed molar ratio of 0.5-50. The catalyst comprises (a) 100 pts. wt. of a support comprising Al2O3, SiO2, ThO2, ZrO2 or MgO ad (b) 0.1-10 (pref. 0.3-4) pts. wt. of Ru, Rh, Ir or Os. The products can be steam-cracked to produce ethylene and propylene. The process is highly selective, e.g. giving 32-91% conversions with selectivities of 35-84% for ethane and 11-31% for propane.
