The method of the invention includes the steps of (1) providing a coated substrate comprising a coatable material disposed on a substrate, the coatable material providing a first major surface of the coated substrate; (2) changing the viscosity of the coatable material from the initial viscosity to a second viscosity; (3) contacting the first major surface of the coated substrate with at least one face-side roller to impart a matte finish; and (4) optionally, hardening the coatable material to provide the film.

The glitter is in the form of many discrete points of light 68 that tend to blink off and on. The array may be configured such that a dihedral angle α varies between adjacent cube faces 31 of adjacent cube-corner elements 30 in each groove in one of the groove sets 45, 46, or 47 and such that the base plane 36 are not parallel to each other when the sheeting 60 is laid flat. Preferably, the dihedral angle α between faces 31 of adjacent cube-corner elements 30 varies in essentially all of the grooves such that the cube-corner elements are randomly tilted throughout the array. The glitter can make the sheeting very useful for aesthetic or decorative applications.

The invention provides a radiation curable release coating composition comprising: (a) about 1 to about 50 percent by weight of a cationically reactive polydiorganosiloxane liquid rubber having formula (I) wherein R are monovalent moieties which can be the same or different selected from the group consisting of alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, and substituted aryl wherein at least about 50 % of the total number of silicon atoms have two methyl groups bonded thereto; E is an organic monovalent functional group comprising from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms having at least one cationically co-reactive functional group; a and b both represent integers, wherein the sum of a plus b is an integer of about 10 to about 1200; b has a value ranging from about 0 to about 0.2a; a is an integer of about 10 to about 1000; and M is a silyl group which must contain at least one cationically co-reactive functional group when b=0 and may contain at least one cationically co-reactive group when b is greater than 0; (b) about 50 to about 99 percent by weight of at least one cationically co-reactive monomer copolymerizable with said cationically co-reactive functional group of said polydiorganosiloxane liquid rubber; wherein the percentages of (a) and (b) are based on the total weight of (a) plus (b); and (c) about 0.5 to about 4 parts by weight of a photoactive radiation activatable cationically reactive catalyst based on the weight of (a) plus (b). The invention also provides release coatings and methods of making release coatings.

Optical films having structured surfaces are used, inter alia, for managing the propagation of light within a display. As displays become larger, it becomes more important that the film be reinforced so as to maintain rigidity. An optical film of the invention has a first layer comprising inorganic fibers embedded within a polymer matrix. A second layer having a structured surface, for providing an optical function to light passing therethrough, is attached to the first layer. The film may have various beneficial optical properties, for example, light that propagates substantially perpendicularly through the first layer may be subject to no more than a certain level of haze or light incident on the film may be subject to a minimum value of brightness gain. Various methods of manufacturing the films are described.

A reflective article has a multilayer film covering a patterned retroreflective layer. In one embodiment the patterned retroreflective layer includes a separate indicia layer covering a retroreflective substrate. The indicia are substantially hidden under normal viewing conditions but easily detectable under retroreflective lighting conditions. Various types of retroreflective layers are disclosed. The article can also include microstructured relief patterns which produce holographic images under ambient lighting but which disappear under retroreflective conditions. The multilayer film includes alternating layers of at least a first and second polymer, and has a relatively high reflectivity for normally incident light within a first spectral range which is approximately coextensive with the visible spectrum, and a relatively low reflectance for normally incident light within a second spectral range. The second spectral range can include a transmission window of 15 % or less fractional bandwidth located at least partially in the visible spectrum. Fil m constructions are disclosed which achieve sharper spectral transitions than previously attainable. Film constructions are also disclose d which preserve such sharp transitions even at high entrance (tilt) angles.

Diffusely reflective articles manufactured from optical bodies including continuous and disperse phases are disclosed along with methods of manufacturing such articles. Also disclosed are underdrawn continuous/disperse phase optical bodies that are particularly well-suited to post-forming operations. The articles, methods and optical bodies of the present invention preferably allow for post-forming of the optical bodies while retaining desired levels of diffuse reflectivity in the articles formed from the optical bodies.

Optical films having structured surfaces are used, inter alia, for managing the propagation of light within a display. As displays become larger, it becomes more important that the film be reinforced so as to maintain rigidity. An optical film of the invention has a first layer comprising inorganic fibers embedded within a polymer matrix. The first layer has a structured surface to provide an optical function to light passing therethrough. The film may have various beneficial optical properties, for example, light that propagates substantially perpendicularly through the first layer may be subject to no more than a certain level of haze or light incident on the film may be subject to a minimum value of brightness gain. Various methods of manufacturing the films are described.

A method of making the microstructured articles is also provided including a) obtaining a tool shaped to include at least one of a protrusion or a concavity; b) disposing a microstructured film on at least a portion of the tool including the protrusion and/or the concavity; and c) thermoforming a single piece of thermoplastic polymer onto the tool to form a microstructured article shaped to include a curve. The curve is an inverse of the protrusion or the concavity of the tool.
