A printer includes a printhead die including liquid ejectors separated by walls. Each liquid ejector includes a nozzle orifice and an associated drop forming mechanism. First and second liquid feed channels, extending in opposite directions, are in fluid communication with each liquid ejector. A liquid inlet includes a plurality of first and second segments in fluid communication with the first liquid feed channels and the second liquid feed channels, respectively. The first and second segments are located on opposite sides of the nozzle orifice. For a given liquid ejector, both of the first and second segments are directly in line with the liquid ejector. An electrical lead extends from each drop forming mechanism toward an edge of the printhead die. At least one of the electrical leads is positioned between neighboring segments of at least one of the first and second segments of the liquid inlet.

An alternate method for operating causes the emission of drops having different volumes traveling at different velocities wherein all velocities are within a pre-determined drop velocity range, v d min to v d max . Further methods for operating an ink jet printhead cause the emission of drops having different volumes and velocities wherein the triggering of the drop emission is delayed so as to result in synchronized arrival times at a print plane.

A printer having mechanically-assisted ink droplet separation and method of using same, for separating an ink meniscus from an ink nozzle orifice while clearing-away particulate matter from about the orifice. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a heater surrounds an orifice formed by the nozzle, the orifice having an ink meniscus residing therein. As the heater heats the ink meniscus, surface tension of the ink meniscus decreases, thereby causing the ink meniscus to extend outwardly from the orifice to define an extended ink meniscus. A cutter, which is disposed near the orifice, includes a plate member disposed opposite an outside surface of the nozzle so as to define a passage between the outside surface and the plate member. The plate member has an opening aligned with the orifice and in communication with the passage. A gas pressure regulator in communication with the passage supplies pressurized gas into the passage, which gas flows along the passage an through the opening. As the gas flows through the opening, it impinges the extended ink meniscus to separate the extended ink meniscus from the orifice. As the extended ink meniscus separates from the orifice, it forms an ink droplet that travels to a receiver medium, so that an ink spot is placed onto the receiver medium. Moreover, as the gas flows through the opening, the gas clears-away particulate matter from about the orifice.

A droplet generator is provided that is particularly adapted for generating micro droplets of ink on demand in an inkjet printhead having a plurality of nozzles. The droplet generator includes a droplet separator formed from the combination of a droplet assistor and a droplet initiator. The droplet assistor is coupled to ink in each of the nozzles and functions to lower the amount of energy necessary for an ink droplet to form and separate from an ink meniscus extending across the nozzle outlet. The droplet assistor may be, for example, a heater or surfactant supply mechanism for lowering the surface tension of the ink meniscus. Alternatively, the droplet assistor may be a mechanical oscillator such as a piezoelectric transducer that generates oscillations in the ink sufficient to periodically form convex ink menisci across the nozzle outlets, but insufficient to cause ink droplets to separate from the outlets. The droplet initiator cooperates with the droplet assistor and selectively causes an ink droplet to form and separate from the ink meniscus. The droplet initiator may be, for example, a thermally-actuated paddle. The droplet separator increases the speed and accuracy of ink micro droplets expelled from the printhead nozzles.

In one embodiment, the temperature sensor is an infrared temperature sensor that reads the surface temperature of the platen and the load sensor is a load cell positioned beneath the die and supporting the die so that the load sensors can measure the direct force applied by the platen against the die. Also, in one embodiment, the infrared sensor is positioned beneath the die so that it can read the platen temperature when the die is displaced to the non-engaging position.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coal slagging gasifier is improved by providing an improved slag removal orifice. The orifice is located centrally within the hearth of a gasifier of the type in which hot burner gases are directed up through the orifice to retain the slag in molten condition on the hearth and in which the slag is periodically discharged through the slag removal orifice. The slag removal orifice is formed as a substantially vertical passageway through the removable slag tap member which comprises a solid cast mass of high thermal conductivity metal having an integrally formed metal tube for circulating liquid coolant through the cast mass. The upper tundish surface of the slag tap member slopes downwardly and inwardly and merges with the slag removal orifice. The coolant tube is capable of retaining its shape without any appreciable distortion during the casting of the surrounding metal mass, extends through the cast mass and forms a coolant conduit adjacent to the tundish surface and to the surface of the orifice passageway and spaced from these surfaces a distance of 0.25 to 1.5 inches. The ends of the tube project out from the mass to provide a coolant inlet and outlet. In operation, coolant is circulated through the tube such that the surfaces of the cast mass in direct contact with slag and burner gases are maintained at a temperature of from 50°C. to 400°C.

Cardiac electrical activity is sensed in four dimensions (three spatial dimensions, X, Y, and Z, and in time). The system triangulates the location of a given event in three spatial dimensions, and then paces the heart in areas that will disrupt the propagation of the arrhythmia. Termination involves delivering low voltage pulses to large areas of the heart, either simultaneously or in rapid sequence.

Human insulin has distinct biological and clinical advantages when compared ? h commercially available animal insulins now used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in man.
