Methods for controlling insects include contacting an insect with an effective amount of a composition described in this specification. A method of insect control by reducing the surface tension of a body of water containing the egg stage of the insect , the method including the step of applying a stable aqueous carbonyl compound containing solution to the surface of the body of water , wherein the solution includes:a) at least one carbonyl compound;b) a surfactant or detergent;c) a pH modifier; andd) a buffer.2. Xanthochymol and garcinol, isoprenylated benzophenones purified from Garcinia xanthochymus fruits, showed multiple activities against fungal biofilms. Both compounds effectively prevented emergence of fungal germ tubes and were also cytostatic, with MICs of 1 to 3 ΞM. The compounds therefore inhibited development of hyphae and subsequent biofilm maturation. Xanthochymol treatment of developing and mature biofilms induced cell death. In early biofilm development, killing had the characteristics of apoptosis. These activities resulted in failure of biofilm maturation and hyphal death in mature biofilms. In mature biofilms, xanthochymol and garcinol caused the death of biofilm hyphae, with 50% effective concentrations (EC 50 s) of 30 to 50 μM. Additionally, xanthochymol-mediated killing was complementary with fluconazole against mature biofilms, reducing the fluconazole EC 50 from greater than 1,024 μg per ml to 13 μg per ml.

The material to be gelled is a hydrocarbon, one or more hydrocarbon-soluble substances, or mixtures thereof, which based on its physical properties plays an important role in setting the controlled release rate. The composition of the hydrocarbon can vary in carbon length from about C-5 to about C-30 and can vary in vapor pressure up to about 600 mm Hg at 20° C. The hydrocarbon range on a weight basis is from about 20 to about 95 percent of the total weight of the gelled composition. A method of coating chemicals that are used in the control of insects whichrotects the chemicals from biodegradation and improves their distribution in insect-containing bodies of water. A fat is mixed with an appropriate solvent, surfactant and chemical to be coated and is heated to a temperature at which relative homogeneity of the solution is achieved. When using a water miscible solvent, the mixture is pressure injected into a body of water as a fine mist under high pressure. A non-water-soluble solvent may be used; in such an instance a suitable solvent extracting process, such as spray drying, is undertaken before the introduction of the material into a body of water. A stable colloid containing the chemical is the final dispersion in a body of water.
