The present invention relates the use of phenothiaziniums and microbial MDR inhibitors to inactivate microorganisms. Methods of the present invention are useful in the treatment of living subjects and in the decontamination of inanimate objects and substances. 1. A method of inactivating microorganisms comprising contacting the microorganism with a phenothiazinium and a microbial MDR inhibitor and irradiating the phenothiazinium such that a phototoxic species is produced that inactivates the microorganism.2.
