Methane reacts with steam generating carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a first catalytic reactor; the resulting gas mixture undergoes Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a second catalytic reactor. In the steam/methane reforming, the gas mixture passes through a narrow channel having mean and exit temperatures both in the range of 750° C. to 900° C., residence time less than 0.5 second, and the channel containing a catalyst, so that only reactions having comparatively rapid kinetics will occur. Heat is provided by combustion of methane in adjacent channels. The ratio of steam to methane may be about 1.5. Almost all methane will undergo the reforming reaction, almost entirely forming carbon monoxide. After Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the remaining hydrogen may be fed back to the combustion channels. The steam for the reforming step may be generated from water generated by the chemical reactions, by condensing products from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and by condensing water vapor generated in combustion.

Provision is made for a sensor that is arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine; an addition valve that is arranged in the vicinity of or at the downstream side of the sensor in the direction of flow of the exhaust gas, and adds an additive agent into the exhaust passage; a catalyst that is arranged at the downstream side of the addition valve, and receives a supply of the additive agent from the addition valve; and pressure difference generation unit that makes a pressure of the exhaust gas in the surrounding of the sensor higher than a pressure thereof in the surrounding of the addition valve. A pressure difference is caused to generate so that the additive agent is suppressed from flowing toward the direction of the sensor.

Methods and apparatuses are described for enriching a first liquid with a gas and introducing the gas-enriched first liquid into a second liquid. The heating element ( 10 ) provided to thaw the reducing agent ( 6 ) is placed inside a cavity ( 16 ) delimited by a bowl ( 13 ), itself placed inside the reservoir ( 1 ). The cavity ( 16 ) of the bowl ( 13 ) communicates with the inner volume ( 5 ) of the reservoir by a valve ( 20 ). A suction pipe ( 12 ) for the reducing agent is submerged in the cavity ( 16 ) of the bowl ( 13 ), the starting point ( 18 ) of said pipe being situated near the heating element ( 10 ). Operation is thus guaranteed when the vehicle is under sloping and inclined conditions, and also in case of freeze.

The system includes a controller that generates a first control signal to set a switching device to a first operational state if the first temperature level downstream of the catalyst is less than a threshold temperature level and the engine is being decelerated. The controller further generates a second control signal to induce a generator to output a second voltage if the first temperature level is less than the threshold temperature level and the engine is being decelerated, such that the second voltage is applied through the switching device in the first operational state to the catalyst to increase a temperature of the catalyst.
