The insulating material is produced by metering at least two components of a reactive mixture, mixing and feeding them to an inlet of a distributor. The reactive mixture is guided in the distributor along a flow path to at least five nozzle openings and discharged. The reactive mixture is applied from each nozzle opening in a free jet onto the upper side of the cover layer which moves in a conveying direction relative to the distributor. The impact points of the jet of reactive mixture on the cover layer lie substantially on a line which extends transversely to the conveying direction. The distance of the two laterally outermost impact points is at least 70% of the width.

A method and apparatus for applying a liquid coating which can be cured to a dry film to a plurality of fasteners each with a blind recess therein without accumulating excessive coating in the blined recesses. The fasteners are received in a cage with a cylindrical sidewall which is rotated with its axis inclined at an acute included angle of about 25° to 65° to the vertical and a speed of 1 to 30 rpm to circulate the fasteners while the liquid coating is sprayed onto the fasteners in the rotating cage. The fasteners with a liquid coating thereon are heated to a temperature of about 325° F. to 425° F. for 10 to 30 minutes to cure the coating to a dry film adhered to each fastener.

A work is applied with a solvent-containing thermosetting coating composition to a thickness larger than a limit thickness over which the coating composition on a surface of the work extending in a vertical direction will normally run or sag in a coating zone. After applied with the coating composition, the work is rotated about a substantially horizontal axis to prevent the coating composition on the vertical surface of the work from running or sagging and is conveyed through a heat-hardening zone for hardening the coating composition applied to the work by heating by a conveyor line. The conveyor line includes a pair of conveyors which are separated from each other upstream of a position where the coating composition is applied to the work to a thickness larger than said limit thickness. The heat-hardening zone includes a pre-heat-hardening zone for half hardening the coating composition and a main heat-hardening zone for fully hardening the coating composition after the coating composition is half hardened. A pooling zone in which a predetermined number of works can be temporarily pooled is provided between the pre-heat-hardening zone and the main heat-hardening zone.
