A metal blank that includes a binder trim component having at least one cut edge with a non-linear section. The creation of the non-linear section simultaneously forms a corresponding section in a binder trim component of an adjacent metal blank so that binder material can be shared therebetween. This reduces the amount of scrap metal, as the binder trim component is subsequently cut off and discarded. Furthermore, the non-linear section can include one or more strategically placed formations, such as projections, recesses, flat sections, etc., that cause it to be non-uniform along its length and to be specifically tailored to the manufacturing requirements of the part being formed.

A framing member incorporates a series of web slots along a portion of the member that are expanded through the process of manufacture. The expansion of the web slots creates voids and metal web elements in the webbed portion of the member, which can be a stud. The voids created during the expansion process can become the voids for running wiring, plumbing and heating ducts. The web elements can be designed to minimize thermal transmission from the exterior to the interior of a wall including the member, as well as provide adequate structure properties required from the structural member. The expanded slots allow the part to enlarge without increasing the amount of raw material and therefore substantially reducing the cost to manufacture. 1. A device for joining metal strips passing successively into a strip processing plant includes two cutting punches having a respective cutting edge which is associated with a cutting edge of the respective other cutting punch. The cutting punches are movable along a cutting axis in a cutting motion to produce an undetachable join in an adjoining region by deformation. In the same position with respect to the cutting axis, the cutting edges of the cutting punches define a cutting gap which extends in the transverse direction and occupies a gap width in a width direction oriented at a right angle to the transverse direction and to the cutting axis. The cutting edges include an acute angle with the transverse direction, viewed from the cutting direction and in that the cutting punches are movable relative to one another in the transverse direction of the cutting gap to change the gap width. 1. Sheet metal workpieces are preheated to a temperature in the range of about 100° C. to about 500° C. for warm forming between press-actuated forming dies. The forming dies are not heated, but are coated with a liquid lubricating material suitable for the forming of the preheated sheet metal workpiece. For example, the liquid lubricating material is suitably a halogenated hydrocarbon that will adhere to unheated die surfaces and serve in the forming of the sheet metal workpiece into a vehicle body panel or other product. But the liquid lubricating material is composed so as to evaporate from surfaces of the formed workpiece at a temperature below about 200° C., so that the workpiece does not have to be cleaned before it is decoratively finished. The lubricant material may be vaporized, for example, into a warm stream of air or nitrogen and carried to a recovery or disposal system.
