A bottom for a paper cup is formed by advancing a punch against a paperboard web to push the web against a cutting edge which cuts out a circular cup bottom blank from the web. The punch is kept in a forward state to clamp an outer peripheral portion of the blank immovably against a surfac e of a sleeve. A reciprocable draw is advanced against a center portion of the blank to push the center portion into a circular opening of the sleeve while maintaining the clamping force, to cause the center portion of the blank to become stretched. The clamping force is then progressively released to permi t the outer peripheral portion to enter the opening and become bent to form a lip extending at a substantially right angle. The lip is compressed within a gap formed between the draw and a surface of the opening. Because of the stretching of the blank, pleats formed in the lip are only in the form of micropleats that are flattened in a non-folded over state.

The bottom construction includes a generally cup-shaped closure element formed from a plastic material sheet which is molded in situ within the bottom end of the tubular body with the plastic material being heated to a molding temperature with the temperature being such that the plastic material of the closure will self-bond to the plastic material of the liner. The closure is of a generally hat-shaped configuration and includes a central cup portion which is telescoped within the end of the tubular body and which is then provided with a reinforcing disk, after which the extreme end portion of the tubular body is curled or rolled radially inwardly to abut against the underside of the reinforcing disk to complete the bottom construction.

The container may be formed of pre-manufactured stock material, by unexpanded stock material or by forming a container body from a paper or paperboard material including a bottom wall and at least one side wall, coating at least the side wall portion of the container body with a thermoplastic synthetic resin film and subsequently printing a pattern on the surface of the thermoplastic synthetic resin film. Once formed, the container is heated at a predetermined temperature for a predetermined time period sufficient to form a heat-insulating layer on the outer surface of the container by expanding the thermoplastic synthetic resin film. The expansion of the thermoplastic synthetic resin is controlled by a thickness of the printed pattern placed thereon, the mineral oil coating or a combination thereof.

A hot air blast acutely angled to the coating ensures the correct application of heat in the desired areas. Heat-splash and other problems caused by over heating are thus avoided.

This invention pertains to a folding type box-shaped container comprising a container body having a hollow member whose top portion and bottom portion are open, a bottom member removably attached to the bottom portion of the hollow member, and a lid member being fitted onto the top portion of the hollow member. The hollow member has a cross-sectional form of a polygon having N sides, where N is an integer of 4 or more, when the hollow member is cut through a plane perpendicular to an axial line thereof. The hollow member has side surface portions in the number of N, and has lingual portions each of which extends from a lower end portion of the side surface portion. Each lingual portion is folded back inwardly and has two sides and an end. The bottom member having a flat plate portion having a flat form of a polygon having N sides and being analogous to the cross-sectional form of the hollow member, and side wall portions that extend downwardly from the sides of the flat plate portion, with each side wall portion of the bottom member being received within a space formed between each side surface portion and lingual portion of the hollow member. The flat plate portion of the bottom member is to be supported by the ends of the lingual portions, when the folding type box-shaped container is assembled.

A hermetically sealed paperboard container with enhanced barrier and seal performances is disclosed that may be produced by a more effective and economical process for the in-plant system. The container includes a container body component, a bottom, and a top lid hermetically sealed to the body component. The container body is formed from a blank comprising a pa-perboard (201) having one surface coated with a first sealant layer (202) and the opposite surface coated with a barrier layer (203), and a second sealant layer (204) applied over the barrier layer (203). One longitudinal end of the blank is skived to a predeter-mined thickness for a predetermined width, folded over onto the blank, and sealed to form a folded longitudinal end. Then, the folded longitudinal end of the blank is overlapped inside the other longitudinal end of the blank to form a body seam that is subse-quently sealed to provide the hollow container body.

A container formed of foldable sheet material including a body of a slightly tapered inverted conical configuration having opposed pairs of closure flaps integrally hinged to the upper rim of the body and foldable to overlie the upwardly directed open mouth of the container. The inward folding of the flaps inwardly flew corresponding portions of the body wall to a generally rectangular configuration adjacent and downward from the rim. The outer flaps interlock by a cooperating tongue and slot. In variations, integral or bonded handles are provided to overlie the closed container.
