Novel binders and a compacted salt containing those binders are provided. The binders comprise an aqueous solution or dispersion of sorbitol and an alkali metal phosphate. The binder is contacted with salt crystals heated to elevated temperatures. After binder contact, the coated salt crystals are passed through a compactor where elevated temperatures and pressures cause the salt to melt and then recrystallize as a sheet that can be broken into pieces. The final salt product has the binding agent substantially uniformly dispersed therethrough, resulting in a salt that has high strength and is resistant to mushing. The inventive products are particularly useful as a water softening salt.

The biocide may be chlorine dioxide, sulphur dioxide, potassium permanganate, tributyl tin oxide (TBTO), cooling tower biocides, hypobromous acid, ozone, and/or ultra violet light. A conditioning process and equipment are provided for removing hardness from water circulated in a system, such as an evaporative cooling system. A sidestream from such system is routed to a reaction chamber and back to the system. A conditioner is added to the sidestream before entering the reaction chamber and a buffer is added to the sidestream exiting the reaction chamber. Since some of the buffered sidestream is re-circulated, a fluid bed develops in the reaction chamber consisting of conditioner, buffer, precipitated solids and sidestream water. Continued sidestream water entry mixes with the fluid bed causing additional precipitation of solids. An upper outlet on the reaction chamber regulates the height of the fluid bed, and a drain provides for periodic discharge of the lower fluid bed. In another embodiment, a corrosion inhibitor blend is pre-mixed with the buffer, resulting in a softer, more readily drainable fluid bed.

Novel binders and a compacted salt containing those binders are provided. The binders comprise an aqueous solution or dispersion of sorbitol and an alkali metal phosphate. The binder is contacted with salt crystals heated to elevated temperatures. After binder contact, the coated salt crystals are passed through a compactor where elevated temperatures and pressures cause the salt to melt and then recrystallize as a sheet that can be broken into pieces. The final salt product has the binding agent substantially uniformly dispersed therethrough, resulting in a salt that has high strength and is resistant to mushing. The inventive products are particularly useful as a water softening salt.

The present invention provides a use of an inorganic salt or acid capable of producing free phosphate or fluoride ion in reducing the hardness and/or alkalinity of a water system containing residual antiscalant. In the lab test, it is found that the addition of a suitable amount of sodium phosphate or sodium fluoride may induce alkalinity reduction as well as hardness reduction. The production efficiency can be enhanced since the scaling was relieved and heat exchange efficiency can be improved. A method of reducing the hardness and/or alkalinity of water , comprising:adding a composition capable of delivering a phosphate ion or a fluoride ion to the water, wherein the composition comprises an inorganic salt or an acid.2. Mono-sodium phosphate solution is prepared by leaching a calcium phosphate, e.g. normal superphosphate, triple superphosphate or phosphate rock treated with H2SO4.HCl or H3PO4, with sea water to form a saturated solution of calcium phosphate, and passing the solution through a cation exchange resin in the sodium form; ion exchange takes place on the resin according to the equation: 2RNa+Ca(H2PO4)2-->R2Ca+2NaH2PO4\t The invention further includes a method of removing metal cations from sea water by mixing the latter with ammonia and sodium phosphate solution obtained as above. A preferred process for the descaling of sea water includes: (a) separating a volume up to 40% of the total sea water; (b) leaching a calcium phosphate with the sea water from (a); (c) passing the saturated calcium phosphate solution from (b) through a cation-exchange resin at a rate such that the effluent contains no calcium; (d) recovering the effluent; (e) returning the effluent to the larger proportion of sea water from (a) together with ammonia; (f) recovering the treated sea water from (e); (g) regenerating the cation-exchange resin with 6% aqueous NaCl. Water, e.g. sea water, which is to be distilled is first treated with a water-soluble polyphosphate and then heated, after which an acid (or a salt which forms acid on hydrolysis) is added to the water before it is introduced into the still, e.g. a vapour-compression still provided with a de-aerator. Suitable polyphosphates are:-tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, and sodium hexametaphosphate. In the case of sea water, 0.5 to 10 parts of polyphosphate are added per million parts of feed water. After addition of the polyphosphate, the feed water is divided into two streams, one of which is heated by passing it in heat-exchange with the distillate, while the other stream is heated in heat-exchange with the brine blowdown. The two streams, which leave the heat-exchangers at a temperature of about 190 DEG F., are then reunited, and the acid substance is added. Suitable acid substances are:-sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, nitric, sulphamic and citric acids, sodium bisulphate, ferric chloride, and aluminium sulphate. The acidified acid is then passed, via a de-aerator, into the still. The pH of the brine withdrawn from the still is continuously checked by an instrument which automatically controls the acid addition to the feed to maintain the brine at a pH of 7.0 to 7.4. The pH of the distillate may be adjusted, as desired, with acid or alkali. The distillate may also be treated with chlorine-water.

The devices and materials can be designed to allow corrosion inhibitors and cleaners to be built into boilers. radiators, heat stores, and any other similar devices. The chemicals are either bound into a gel or dissolved within the crystal lattice of a phase change compound. It is possible to design materials that will rapidly release the chemicals at elevated temperatures. These materials allow cold water flushing of systems without releasing the chemicals. The devices can also be modified to incorporated softening resin to remove the hardness from the system water and thereby prevent scaling.

The pre-conditioned wastewater is mixed with anaerobic granular sludge, and an anaerobic reaction is performed in a high hydraulic shear flow field formed by the biogas, so as to generate the biogas and calcium scale. A part of the biogas for the stirring is refluxed by bubbling of the biogas and the rest of the biogas is refluxed for forming the high hydraulic shear flow field.
