A lubricantreservoir 1 is arranged below the compressormotor. A passage 5 establishes communication between the reservoir and the air delivery-port 6, and a pipe 7 connects the lower part of the reservoir with an injection port 8 situated between the delivery port 6 and the inlet port 9. A check-valve 12 is inserted in the pipe 7 to prevent leakage of air by way of the port 8, when compressed air enters the port 9. Alternatively, a check-valve may be inserted in the passage 5. When the apparatus acts as a compressor or is running idle, lubricant is forced past the valve 12 into the cylinder 2 by air pressure from the delivery port 6. Surplus lubricant drains to the reservoir through the passage 5. No lubricant is supplied to the cylinder when the apparatus functions as a self-starter. Plugs 16, 18 are provided for filling and draining the reservoir. The invention may be applied to compressor-motors having more than three blades.

PNEUMATIC STARTER FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE A starter arrangement for an engine includes a fluid actuated rotary vane motor which is adapted to engage an associated engine. The rotary motor has a plurality of blades or vanes with each of the blades being made from a fiber reinforced plastic material to reduce friction. A sleeve, in which the rotary motor is positioned, has on its inner surface a hard metallic coating to reduce friction. A relay valve member selectively provides a pressurized operating fluid to the rotary motor. The blade material and the sleeve inner surface coating cooperate to enable the vane motor, when it is actuated by the relay valve member, to rotate in the sleeve with a minimum of friction thereby obviating the need for a lubricating agent.

The preturbine (80) is driven by air supplied by a storage reservoir (68) and starts operating after an air starter motor (46) has been actuated. Operation is continued until, as a result of the ignition of the fuel, the engine (2) attains a high speed, after which the starter motor (46) and the preturbine (80) are disengaged, whereby the engine decelerates. When the engine reaches a preset low speed, the preturbine (80) is reengaged and stages of operation of the preturbine (80) coinciding with engine acceleration alternate with inoperative stages coinciding with engine deceleration until an engine speed above the low speed is maintained. A pneumatically operated starter having a combination pistonvalve, located in a first chamber downstream of the usual on-off valve, that throttles the starter to a low speed initially in its closed position and as air is supplied opens in response to the air pressure and simultaneously engages the starter pinion with the engine ring gear and upon further engagement of the starter pinion allows air to freely pass and accelerate the starter. Upon the starting of the engine, the piston-valve is automatically returned to its initial position by a combination of mechanical helical pinion throwout, spring return and latching pressurization of a second chamber behind the piston-valve. Latching pressurization is accomplished by a second valve admitting air pressure behind the piston-valve in response to a pressure signal developed in the starting cycle. The air supply may then be shut off manually to stop the throttled rotation of the starter and to reset the second valve controlling the latching pressurization of the chamber behind the piston-valve to ready the starter for the next starting cycle.

A pressure sensitive device (22) is fitted to the inlet manifold (1). When the vehicle is moving under its own inertia, and the accelerator pedal (8) is therefore not depressed, the depression in the inlet manifold (1) actuates the device (22) which closes the switch (33). Closing the switch (33) energises the solenoid (12). When the solenoid (12) is energised the butterfly valve (5) of the carburettor (2) is closed and a by-pass valve (14) is opened. The by-pass valve passes fuel free air to the engine so that no fuel is used under these conditions. When the accelerator pedal is depressed the solenoid (12) is deenergised and the engine resumes normal running.

A system for obviating chance damage in starting a diesel engine due, for example, to hydraulic lock utilizes a two step starting cycle and includes means for applying power to initiate and maintain a drive of the engine for starting thereof and associated controls rendered operative on a drive of the engine to sense the speed of crankshaft rotation and interrupt said application of power in response to a pre-set speed thereof which is substantially less than that required to start the engine to induce thereby a reduction of said speed and in response to such reduction a reapplication of said power. A portion of said controls is conditioned to automatically respond to a predetermined extent of rotation of the engine crankshaft to nullify ability of the controls to thereafter functionally interfere with the engine drive, whereupon there is an increase in the speed of crankshaft rotation to a level sufficient to induce a starting of the engine and its normal operation. This system is enhanced in its application to a preferred embodiment of the invention featuring a pneumatic starter. In this embodiment delivery of fluid under pressure, the source of power to energize the starter and crank the engine until it starts, is controlled to insure the speed of crankshaft rotation during the initial phase of starting is maintained below the aforementioned pre-set level until the crankshaft has revolved at least 360°.

Starting systems for use with internal combustion engine have in the past used a variety of add on mechanical mechanisms to provide cold starting. Many of these systems fail to provide the option of controllably and modulatively varying the sequence and amount of the opening and closing of an intake or exhaust valve relative to a piston position in a cylinder bore. The present invention provides an electronic control system outputting an discrete control signal, and an opening device for unit actuation of each of the pair of valves independently. The electronic control system is programmable to respond in a first predetermined logic pattern for conventional operation of the engine at which time each of the pair of valves is in the open position during the exhaust stroke. The electronic control system is programmable to a second predetermined logic pattern to vary the operation of the valves associated with the respective bore in the generally closed position for a portion of the exhaust stroke before top dead center during the exhaust stroke of the piston. The preestablished logic pattern controllably, sequentially and modulateably actuate the device for unit actuation, moving each of the valves independently between the open and closed position to effectively increase the heat within the during the movement of a piston from a bottom dead center position to a top dead center position.

A valve assembly for use preferably with an engine starting system, the valve assembly including a housing providing a fluid flow path therethrough. A valve seat astride the flow path is disposed in the housing, and a valve head is mounted on a piston reciprocally mounted in the housing. The piston defines, with the housing, a control chamber and a reaction chamber, the latter of which communicates with the flow path downstream of the valve seat. Spring means biases the piston and valve head toward the valve seat so that the flow path is normally closed to fluid flowage therealong. Increased fluid pressure in the control chamber acts on the piston to open valve and thus the flow path, and comparatively high pressure downstream of the valve seat raises the pressure in the reaction chamber to force the valve head against the valve seat to prevent upstream flowage of the gases creating the high downstream pressure.
