Fixed to the ring e is a toothed disk n which engages a toothed wheel on the spindle of a pointer b which indicates the inclination of the instrument on a dial a. The ball has a bearing member b, a driving fit therein and bearing pins g adjustable by nuts h engage the recessed ends thereof. The ring e is mounted on pivots i, i<1>, one i being carried on a bracket j fixed to the dial-supporting plate k. The instrument is fixed in the cock-pit at the side or front of the pilot for indicating inclinations in the direction of motion or at right-angles thereto.

Aspects of the present invention provide an optical leveling system and method. Embodiments of the present invention utilize a pendulum having an opening through which light can pass to create varying light patterns in response to movement of the pendulum relative to an enclosure. The varying light patterns are detected and utilized to determine the position of the pendulum relative to the enclosure, which can be expressed as degrees and increments of degrees of deviation from a level condition. Embodiments of the present invention can be utilized, for example, to remotely monitor whether a mainframe computer system is level and, if necessary, alert service personnel.

The angular deflection or tilt angle from vertical is determined by an inclinometer wherein a weight is offset and hung from a rotatable shaft to which a needle pointer is affixed. When the inclinometer is oriented such that the shaft is vertically aligned, the gravitational force on the weight is in a direction parallel to the shaft's axis and no torque results. When so oriented, a magnetic spring system holds the shaft in a reference position and the needle points to the center of a graduated scale, thereby indicating a zero tilt angle. If the inclinometer, and consequently the shaft, are tilted in a tilt plane, defined by the shaft and the center of the scale, the weight exerts a torque on the shaft and causes pivoting of the needle away from the center of the scale to indicate the direction of tilt and the magnitude of the tilt angle.

The present invention relates to an inclination measuring device and an inclination measuring method using the inclination measuring device using an optical fiber sensor capable of measuring the three-dimensional inclination of an inclination measurement object for safety inspection by vertical rotation and planar rotation of a rotary joint. The present invention includes a center weight (3) disposed to be orthogonal to an inclined rotary ring (20) and a rotary joint (2) having a joint coupling ring (11), a sensor coupling ring (12), and the inclined rotary ring (20) capable of planar rotation and vertical rotation; and a plurality of optical fiber sensors (4) for stretching strain measurement disposed between the upper end of the center weight (3) and the sensor coupling ring (12). When the center weight (3) is moved to maintain the gravity direction in accordance with the inclination of the inclination measurement object, the inclined rotary ring (20) of the rotary joint (2) performs planar rotation and vertical rotation, and then stretching deformation occurs in the optical fiber sensor (4). The stretching deformation is measured so that the degree of inclination of the center weight (3) is grasped. As a result, the degree of inclination of the inclination measurement object is measured. Accordingly, accurate stretching strain measurement is possible by means of the optical fiber sensor even when the inclination measurement object is inclined three-dimensionally, and thus the degree of inclination of the inclination measurement object can be measured with high accuracy.
