The electronic variable capacity switching system is used for telephone interconnection exchanges. The switching arrangement is connected to a common centre installation supplying subscriber sets by a single line common to the subscribers. This line is used to carry all control and speech signals. The centre contains all the switching groups together with automatic modulation and demodulation systems required to allow transmission of the signals to each subscriber set. An extendable ring counter works with a system of gates and electronic switches preventing cross coupling of lines. Each line has a carrier frequency modulated using a shift register, multiplexing system, oscillator, and a variable filter network.

An interface circuit is disclosed for ground starting central office trunks connected via a station carrier system to a plurality of PBX subscriber terminals. The interface circuit extends ground start signals between central office sensing means and subscriber terminal control means over the high frequency transmission cable of a multiple-channel station carrier system. Associated with each of the plurality of multiple-channel units that interface central office terminal trunks to the carrier system are ground start sensing means multiply connected to ground start common circuitry. The ground start common circuit interprets signals from the ground start sensing means as to which of the voice frequency connecting pairs indicates a signal ground and subsequently forwards this information in the form of modulated intelligence on a discrete carrier over the high frequency transmission highway. At the PBX terminal, ground start control means are used to demodulate the transmitted intelligence and selectively control the subscriber terminal for voice frequency connection or battery reversal. The ground start control circuitry further includes means to initiate a ground start signal through the station carrier channel circuitry that is recognized by the ground start sensing means and used to alert the corresponding central office trunk of such a condition.

Disclosed herein is a filter adapted to be used in conjunction with carrier-derived telephone circuits, so as to insure privacy of that subscriber carrier circuit from intentional eavesdropping. In service, this filter is interposed between the subscriber carrier apparatus and the physical pair, being electrically in contact with each via appropriate connections. Basically, the filter is composed of three fundamental elements, a rectifier-low-pass filter combination electrically bridged by a high-pass filter. This three-element combination does not noticeably affect either carrier frequencies passing through the filter or normal voice frequency operation on the physical pair, but does weaken voice frequency signals sufficiently upon such passing through the filter so as to prohibit eavesdropping. Additionally, the rectifier-low-pass filter combination allows passage of voltage through the filter to permit use of the filter with carrier systems, which depend upon the voltage on the physical pair to power the subscriber unit or to maintain a charge on a battery located in the subscriber carrier apparatus.

In a carrier telephony intercommunication system each substation incorporates a local oscillator which is used both to frequency change incoming signals to an intermediate frequency to be amplified in an i.f. amplifier, and also as a carrier frequency for outgoing signals. The local oscillator in each substation is normally tuned to a frequency different from that of any other substation but is tunable to any one of a number of other frequencies to allow communication with any other substation on that substation's frequencies. Fig. 3 shows a substation circuit in which the local oscillator 22 comprises a self oscillating mixer tunable by push-buttons 1-20 to any one of 20 oscillator frequencies one of which is the normal call receiving frequency for the set and the remaining 19 allowing communication with any one of 19 similar sets. Incoming signals are fed from a coaxial line 21 to the base of mixer 23 through the tuned circuit 24, the i.f. signal being obtained in the collector circuit and fed via tuned transformer 26, i.f. amplifier 37, detector 38, and a.f. amplifier 39 to the receiver 40. Speech signals from the microphone 36 modulate the collector voltage of transistor 23, via the a.f. amplifier 35 and transformer 28, and cause the oscillatory output of the transistor to be amplitude modulated by the speech, the resulting signals being fed to the coaxial line via the output tapping on the oscillator coil 28. In a carrier current communication system in which the carrier is used for signalling, a relay 4 for imposing ringing current on a voice frequency line 1, 3 is controlled by the potential across a sharply-tuned resonant circuit. In the embodiment shown, incoming carrier frequency currents from line 41 are applied to the resonant circuit comprising an inductance 85 and condensers 81 and 83 via a high-pass filter 37, lines 43 and 71, transformer 75 and line 35. The potentials across the tuned circuit control a valve 89, the output of which is rectified and fed back to the grid via resistor 113 to reduce the anode current and release the relay 4, which connects a ringing source to the V.F. line and switches in a resistor 67 to maintain the balance of a hybrid transformer 9. Ringing currents from the V.F. line operate a relay 27 which provides a path between a modulator 15 and the line 41 and cuts out a tuned circuit 49 and 57 which normally serves to suppress the carrier. The two-way transmission of speech currents through the single modulator 15 is the same as is described in Specification 672,729.

In a subscriber carrier station terminal including a two-wire drop that is associated with a VF hybrid circuit and a handset thereof, a DC ringer voltage is generated by a DC-DC converter that is powered only during a ringing cycle. Power to drive the ringer in the handset is coupled to the two-wire drop through a pair of back-to-back (decoupling) diodes that are connected to the neutral terminal of the converter and relay contacts that are switched at the central office ringing frequency between +80 volt and -80 volt DC output lines of the converter. The VF hybrid is decoupled from the two-wire drop by a third diode during ringing. The converter is decoupled from the drop circuit by the back-toback diodes when voice signals are on the drop lines. Positive ring trip is provided during a ringing cycle by sensing the current transient produced in the drop when the associated subscriber carrier handset goes off hook in order to turn off the converter for a prescribed time interval to enable establishment of loop current and completion of ring trip.

1433969 Automatic exchange INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 21 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22546/74 Addition to 1418447 Heading H4K In the switching system of the parent in which required interconnections are established by selecting corresponding frequencies of RF equipments coupled to respective antennae in a magnetically isolated space, the line terminal equipments each comprise detecting means for controlling switching operations in response to the receipt over the RF channel of one or several signalling frequencies, and sending means to transmit over the RF channel one or several signalling frequencies for switching purposes in a coupled terminal equipment, certain of the switching operations in the terminal units being effected by direct signalling from one to the other when a direct connection is established. The exchange apparatus, Fig. 2, comprises subscribers line circuits LA, incoming trunk circuits JA outgoing trunk circuits JD and auxiliary devices such as subscribers dialling junctors JN, outgoing senders EVD, incoming receivers RA and service line circuits LS all provided with an RF transmitter E and all except LS being provided with an RF receiver. Slow scanners EXL are DL in an interface unit for common control unit UCC determine conditions of subscribers lines and trunk lines respectively, and a fast scanner is supplied for alternative use in scanning the trunk lines. Markers MR set the frequencies of receivers R associated with the respective circuit units under the control of computer UCC. All the units of computer and interface are duplicated. A callers off-hook condition is indicated to common control UT by scanner EXL in response to the operation of relays L and A and after the class of the caller has been checked the controller selects an idle dialling junctor JN and supplies its number together with that of the caller to register RG of marker MR. The signals control a receiving relay through a rectifier which may be preceded by a heterodyne stage. The Specification explains the considerations that govern the choice of frequency for the auxiliary signals to bring them between adjacent speech bands and to avoid spurious operation of the receiving relay by speech or by carrier leak. In a single or multi-channel system in which each channel employs VF signalling and a common pilot frequency is also transmitted, line interruptions of short duration are prevented from affecting the associated exchange equipment whereas an interruption of longer duration results in the release of any exchange equipment already seized. In Fig. 1, an " outband " signalling tone of 3825 c/s. is transmitted during the idle condition and a common pilot frequency of 104.08 kc/s. is transmitted continuously, relays RB, RC being maintained inoperative by the pilot detector DET and relay RA being energized over the tone contact of the signal receiver REC. An interruption of signalling tone gives a calling signal over line LE and relay RA falls back slowly. A break in the line has the same effect, but before the exchange relay has time to respond, its circuit is opened by the operation of RB which also makes a holding circuit for RA. If the break is of sufficient duration, say 10 or 20 seconds, RC also operates and releases RA. If a break in the line occurs after the signalling tone has been interrupted, RA is back and the operation of RB maintains the calling condition, unless the break is of sufficient duration to operate RC when the calling circuit is opened to release the exchange equipment. Rectifiers MR2, MR3 serve to isolate the channels from one another. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the signalling tone is transmitted during the busy condition. Instead of " outband " VF signalling, the system may employ 2-frequency " inband " signalling.
