The image is automatically corrected to compensate for said noise. Scanning of the object may be carried out using a plurality of light sources; obtaining a plurality of pixel data values. Correction preferably comprises subtracting dark noise values from the pixel data values to obtain intermediate values, normalised by multiplying by gain values to generate a digital image. The plurality of light sources may be activated simultaneously, or the process is repeated for each of a plurality of light sources. A system having logic, and a computer readable medium holding an instruction set, to carry out the methods are also claimed.

To permit an entire line to be covered, the arrays are offset from one another in the direction of scan with adjoining array ends overlapped. To correct for the misalignment and redundancy introduced, the image data from the arrays is buffered until a line is completed when readout, is initiated. During readout, cross over from one array to the next is effected within the overlapped areas and the redundant data discarded.

To deal with it, a test chart of a specified length is first read to measure amounts of movement of the light source and the reading optical unit. Then, the reading optical unit is moved by a predetermined amount. The light source is moved to effect a correction based on the amount of movement initially measured. When a user holds an optical scanning device to scan a micro dotmap on a displaying medium, a coordinate of a frame center of a retrieved frame on the displaying medium is calculated according to a decoding method for the micro dotmap in advance. A moving vector corresponding to a difference between difference frames scanned by the optical scanning device at different moments is calculated so that an instant location of the frame center on the displaying medium can be calculated anytime. Therefore, a large number of calculations brought by frequent decoding may be saved since merely a few calculations are required in calculating the moving vector. By further decoding the coordinate of the frame center at moments spaced with constant or variable intervals, errors brought by vibrations of the displaying medium are instantly fixed. Accumulated errors are avoided in the calculated instant locations of the frame center anytime. 1. According to an embodiment of this invention, opening/closing of an ADF unit is correctly detected even under the influence of outside light. More specifically, a light source provided in a reading unit is turned on to irradiate a white board, and first data based on reflected light from the white board is obtained. Next, the light source provided in the reading unit is turned off, and second data based on reflected light from the white board is obtained. The difference between the first data and second data is compared with a predetermined threshold. It is determined based on the comparison whether the ADF unit is in an opened or closed state. 1. An image reading apparatus comprising:a reading unit, having a light source and an image sensor, configured to read an image of an original on a platen glass;a feeding unit capable of opening/closing with respect to the platen glass and configured to feed the original;a white reference arranged facing the reading unit in a case where the feeding unit is closed;an obtaining unit configured to obtain first data by the image sensor when the light source is on, and obtain second data by the image sensor when the light source is off, prior to image reading; anda determination unit configured to determine an opened/closed state of the feeding unit based on the first data and the second data.2. The indicator provides a visible indication of the portion. 1. An apparatus comprising:a transparent platen;a command interface configured to receive externally originating instructions including a selected scaling value, other than 100%, for a scanning operation of a document resting against the transparent platen, wherein contents of the document to be scanned are proportionally magnified or shrunk based on the selected scaling value and wherein the selected scaling value impacts an area of the transparent platen that will be captured during the scanning operation;a scanner unit comprising a carriage movable across the platen;a controller to control the scanner unit to capture a portion of the transparent platen, the portion having borders automatically determined and proportionally changed by the controller based upon the selected scaling value; andan indicator providing a visible indication of the portion,wherein movement of the carriage repositions the visible indication, wherein the visible indication of the scan area provided by the indicator on the carriage indicates a width of the portion.2. A scanning device including a body, a transparent cover, a scanning module, a flat-cable and a pressing unit is provided. The body has a space, a first inner-side and a second inner-side. The transparent cover covers on the body to hide the space. The scanning module disposed in the space is capable of moving back and forth between the first and the second inner-sides. The flat-cable is disposed in the space and connected with the scanning module and the body. The pressing unit is pivotally connected on the scanning module with a side thereof, so that another side of the pressing unit without being pivotally connected on the scanning module leans against on the flat-cable through the weight itself to suppress the flat-cable, so as to prevent the flat-cable from contacting with the transparent cover when the scanning module moves back and forth between the first and the second inner-sides.
