A general purpose network tone detection method and apparatus that allows the precise and accurate recognition of North American tones (MF, DTMF (Dual-Tone Multifrequency), and CPT (Call Progress Tones)) and international MF-R2 tones as well as taking into consideration other common tones such as Calling Card Service Prompt and Recall Dial. Through the use of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) on small time windows and by providing phase continuity between these windows, the results of the successive DFTs may be combined and processed by a second DFT computation. This second DFT allows higher frequency resolution without requiring the re-computation of the DFT from the time samples. The resulting effect is a tone receiver with both high time and frequency resolution which consequently leads to robust and accurate tone recognition systems conforming even to the most stringent specification while maintaining low computational requirements.

In a time division multiplex telephone exchange, tone signals are supplied by a digital signal generator. Each tone frequency is stored as a sequence of 8-bit words representing successive samples of one cycle. They are read out, one at a time, and sent in the appropriate time channel by a logic instruction circuit. Specifications for signals, e.g. a 4-tone signal, are stored as sets of 4 words and are read out by the logic circuit, controlled by a clock driven channel selector. The generation of a signal is monitored by a word stored in a transmission control store. It is incremented after each cycle of tone and compared with the specification to control duration of tone, spacing and switching to next frequency. Sixteen such signals are generated continuously and sent in different time channels.

The circuit is used in telephony when line checking at 50Hz and 450Hz. The locally generated signal at high level is connected to a bridge rectifier (D4-7) and it provides the supply to a transistor detector stage (T5). The test signal after attenuation through line equipment is amplified and squared (T1, T2) and slaves a monstable multivibrator (T3, T4). This square-wave passes to the detector and if the stage is active (i.e. the high level signal is present) a diode and capacitor circuit (D2, C7) links it to an output transistor that provides an output signal and energises a light-emitting diode. This circuit protects against false readings caused by parasitic voltages by its system of coincidence detection.

In a V.F. receiver of the single frequency type, means therein for generating an output signal for the operation of a telephone exchange, is responsive only when a tone at the signalling frequency exceeds a specified level. Voice frequency input signals pass through a transistor amplifier 1 and amplitude limiter 2 to a dividing network 3, e.g. a transformer. Assuming that speech or excessive line noise is being received, then after any harmonics of the signalling frequency have been removed in a lowpass filter (L.C. type) 4, the signals are passed through a common base transistor amplifier 5, a band stop filter 6, which removes any signalling frequency present, and a negative feedback amplifier 7, using a transistor connected as an emitter follower, to a detector 8. The detected signal, after being limited by a suitably arranged pair of diodes at 9 and delayed in a C.R. network, is applied as a guard voltage to a transistor amplifier 10 in the signalling circuit. It is stated that the guard voltage especially when developed by excessive line noise is limited sufficiently to allow it to decay rapidly so as to reduce distortion of a first incoming signal. A common base type transistor amplifier 10, which contains an acceptor resonance circuit tuned to the signalling frequency, operates in response to a tone at the signalling frequency and this signal after detection at 11 is applied as a negativegoing pulse to the base of a transistor which acts as a level filter 12. If the base voltage becomes lower than the emitter voltage, i.e. the tone at the signalling frequency is of sufficient amplitude, the transistor bottoms and a relay 13 is operated. In order to reduce duration distortion of the signal a condenser in a relay slugging circuit is charged by a portion of the collector current feeding the relay and, at the end of the signalling pulse, it discharges ...

The telephone system for installation in a home allows one main and four extensions to make internal calls or use the exchange line. All telephones are normally switched to the house busbar. An internal call is made by lifting a receiver and dialling the called extension number. Other extensions can join in by lifting their receivers or can be called by dialling the numbers. The microprocessor switches the called extension to the exchange busbar and connects the ringing supply to it. When the called extension answers, the microprocessor switches it back to the house busbar. An incoming call on the exchange line is detected by the microprocessor, which switches the main to the exchange busbar and rings it. When the main answers, the exchange busbar is switched through to the exchange line. A loud bell can be switched on and an extension can answer an outside call by dialling the exchange code.

[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In an arrangement for signalling over a circuit which may form part of a telephone connection, synchronous impulses are created at the transmitting and receiving ends and a counting switch stepped by the impulses at the transmitting end determines the duration of transmission of continuous A.C. to the receiving end to render effective a certain number of the impulses thereat. As shown, the impulses are supplied by generators IMP1, 2 which in the case of signalling within an exchange may consist of cams mounted on a common shaft. When the generators are located in different exchanges they may be synchronized by known methods. Signalling is started by the closure of contacts St1, 2 at the two ends, whereupon IMP1 controls relay B3 and IMP2 steps the switch SS. As soon as the latter moves offnormal, A.C. preferably of .voice frequency is sent over wire X of the connection and, through a transformer T, causes a cold-cathode tube L to strike, thereby putting relay B4 under the control of B3 to repeat impulses. When the switch SS reaches a marked contact, relay B2 energizes and cuts off the A.C. to terminate the repetition of impulses.

[Class 40 (iv)] In a system in which voice-frequency impulses arriving at the incoming end of a junction are repeated forward as direct current impulses, the first impulse of each train is not repeated, but serves only to disable the transmission path between the junction and the incoming selector in order to guard against backward surges which might affect the echo-suppressors, an additional direct current impulse being generated at the end of the train and the disablement being maintained throughout the train and for a further period sufficient to cover a hunting operation. A VF seizing signal energizes relays L, NR, AR (not shown), of which L introduces the combined loss pad and termination YA ... YE, while NR connects - up the line relay A of the incoming selector. Relay AR releases in response to each numerical impulse, and relays EB, EM are so arranged that EB is energized at each break of AR and short-circuited at each make, whereas EM is energized at each make and short-circuited at each break. At the first break, EB connects up SG which opens the transmission path and at the subsequent make EM connects up C which completes the usual loop circuit for relay A, the succeeding impulses being repeated by AR. At the end of the incoming train, EB, EM relapse in turn and generate an additional impulse in the outgoing loop circuit. The relapse of C, SG follows and the transmission path is restored. The release lag of EB is such that the make period preceding the locally generated impulse is not long enough to release the C relay of the selector, while the lag of EM is such that it terminates an outgoing impulse ahead of AR if the break period imposed by that relay is unduly long.

A voice-frequency receiver distinguishes single frequency signals by the fact that they exceed lower and upper thresholds during each positive excursion whereas more complex signals may have positive excursions that exceed only one of the thresholds. As illustrated the invention is applied to a receiver for two 1-out-of-n V.F. codes, one signal being in an upper band passed by Vra while the other signal is in a lower band passed by Vrb. Considering the upper band alone: a received signal is applied to a threshold device V11 tied to a low threshold potential Uv1 (possibly zero), and a threshold device V21 tied to a high threshold potential Uv2. The potential Uv1 is taken from a potential divider and is fixed while the potential Vv2 is varied by a transistor PS in accordance with the average value of the received signal. Both thresholds may be fixed or both may be dependent on average signal value. When the lower threshold is exceeded a differentiator DG11 pulses a delay circuit T11 and an AND gate U11. When the upper threshold is exceeded a differentiator DG21 pulses a delay circuit T21 and an AND gate U21. After the differentiator outputs have subsided the delay circuit outputs set or reset a bi-stable FF1. So long, therefore, as FF1 is not already in the state to which a delay circuit output directs it the gates U11, U21 will remain closed. If, as will happen with a signal waveform of single frequency, a positive-going excursion crosses both thresholds in turn, bistable FF1 is switched back and forth the gates U11, U21, remaining closed. If the waveform is such, however, that it only exceeds one of the thresholds during a positive-going excursion (either because the excursion is not great enough to reach the high threshold or starts from above the low threshold) one of the thresholds is exceeded twice without the other being exceeded ...

The present invention relates to a network connection with a customer premises equipment. The network signal processor emits a tag signal indicating that the signal processing platform is in use. Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) sends a coordination signal to the network signal processor upon detection of the tag signal. The customer premises equipment measures the signal loss, adjusts the gain mapping, and outputs the adjustment signal to the network signal processor that sends the adjustment signal to the customer premises equipment. The customer premises equipment then evaluates the shape of the spectrum based on the coordination signal from the network signal processor and equalizes (equalizes) the receive path so that the signal processing platform is detected and implemented. Embodiments of the present invention are an illustration of a more general concept of using CPE as an agent in telephone network maintenance.
