Intermittent energization of a high-frequency load, such as the transmitter in an echo ranging system, is effected by a switching system which first connects the load to the high-frequency source and subsequently short-circuits the source, which is preferably a machine having a short-circuit current but little greater than its full load current. Switching is preferably effected by a drum switch driven by a synchronous motor, the drum contacts being relieved of opening under load by an electromagnetic contactor which maintains a further short-circuit on the source whilst the drum contacts are opening. The drum may also control contacts in the exciting circuit of the source, whereby excitation may be interrupted, with or without momentary prior reversal, whilst the source is short-circuited.
