In a process for impregnating wood in which the wood and the impregnating liquid surrounding it are subjected to pressures alternately greater and less than the pressure of the air within the wood, each change from high to low pressure and back again is carried out substantially instantaneously, i.e. within a period of a few seconds. The pressure of the air within the wood may be increased by pretreatment with compressed air, or by use of a heated impregnating liquid. A complete cycle consisting of one high-pressure and one low-pressure stage may last for 10 seconds up to 10 minutes. Formulµ are quoted from which may be calculated the total number of cycles required, which may be from 5 to 500, the length of the cycle, and the relative length of each pressure stage in a cycle at different phases of the impregnation. The wood is placed in a vessel 1, Fig. 7, which is then closed. Impregnating liquid from tank 2 is pumped into the vessel by pump 3 while air escapes through a valve 8. When the vessel is full, valve 8 automatically closes as a spherical sealing member 18, Fig. 8, floats on the liquid and is pressed against an upper sealing surface 19. The liquid pressure rises until it reaches a known value, after which liquid passes through pressure relief valve 11, Fig. 7, and returns to the tank. The electric motor 4 driving the pump 3, which is a reversible pump such as a gear pump, is then switched into the control of an automatic, current reversing device, so that impregnating liquid is alternately withdrawn from the vessel 1 to produce a subatmospheric pressure, and supplied to it to produce a high pressure. Alternatively, non- reversible pumps, e.g. centrifugal pumps, may be employed, and reversal of flow obtained by valve devices, or two pumps may be used, one serving as a suction pump and the other as a pressure pump. The current reversing device may be controlled by amplified impulses from a photo-electric cell which receives a light beam that is periodically interrupted by opaque areas on a film web traversing the beam at constant speed. Alternate transparent and opaque areas on the film web correspond to the alternate low and high pressure stages.
