Sights and methods of sighting; field carriages.- Relates to combined elevating and sighting gear of the kind described in Specifications No. 2919, A.D. 1904, and No. 2558, A.D. 1907, in which the ranging and pointing screws are arranged co-axially and consists in applying the gear to mountings in which a traversing-bar is not used, and in arranging the ranging screw so that it abuts upon but does not extend comp'etely through the pointing-screw ; the abutment being surrounded by a box connected to the sights. The ranging-screw A is united to the pointing-screw B by a box C having a trunnion c to which the sight-actuating lever C' is pivoted. The pointing-screw B is raised or lowered by rotating a nut B<2>, carried by a box B' pivotally mounted on the trail, through gearing e<2>, b<2> and a a hand-wheel E, and is prevented from rotating by a slot b<5> and a fixed projection b<6>. The ranging- screw A is rotated so as to raise or tower a nut A', pivotally mounted on the gun-cradle A<2> by rotating a keyed spindle B<4> through the medium of a sleeve B<3>, gearing f<3>, b<3>, and a hand-wheel F. A range dial of the kind described in Specification No. 23,532, A.D. 1902, may be provided.
