Tanning, tawing, and the like.-Skins, furs, hides, pelts, &c. are converted into leather by the action of formic, acetic, propionic, acrylic, as other aldehydes or their polymers together with alkaline carbonates, hydrates, or earths, or weak alkaline compounds such as saponaceous materials. For example, skins &c. prepared by washing, liming, bating, puring, or drenching are treated in a drum with warm distilled water, and a mixture of formic aldehyde with a solution of sodium carbonate is gradually added. After treatment in the drum for from three to forty-eight hours, the alkali is removed by the action of a solution of ammonium sulphate, and the skins are then agitated in a solution of soft soap together with common salt. The skins are subsequently dried and finished. The treatment may be combined with tanning by tannic or chromic solutions, or with the alum tawing process.
