Реферат: A guidewire extension system (10) is disclosed for connecting an extension wire (20) to a guidewire (18) having a tubular outer body (12), a guidewire retention element (14), an extension wire retention element (16), a guidewire (18) and an extension wire (20). The guidewire retention element (14) and the extension wire retention element (16) are fixed within the outer body and are preferably helically wound wires which form a right-handed groove (40) and a left-handed groove (38). The guidewire (18) and the extension wire (20) each have tapered ends (56) and a reduced diameter extension core (58) each having a helically wound wire (12) formed to adhere to the extension core. The guidewire (18) is connected to the extension wire (20) by inserting the extension core (58) of the guidewire (18) into the outer tube (12) and inserting the helically wound wire into the right-handed groove (40) and by inserting the extension core (58) of the extension wire into the outer tube (12) and inserting the helically wound wire into the left-handed groove (38). The outer body (12) is then rotated clockwise to simultaneously pull the extension wire (20) and guidewire (18) together until the tapers of each abut and bear against the outside edge of the outer tube providing a mechanical lock and providing a connection having the same pushability and flexibility as the guidewire (18). The system provides an extension wire (20) to be connected to a guidewire (18) without rotating the extension wire (20) or the guidewire (18) and provides for a unitized system that has a smooth, outer diameter of the extension wire (20), guidewire (18) and outer body (12).
