B. ; 321, Park Avenue, Rutherford, New Jersey, both in U.S.A.) April 23, 1930, No. 12586. [Class 117.] In the separation of mixed materials such as coal and shale by passing them over an air-pervious bed and subjecting them to the upward pressure of air, the variation in the depth of the bed from a predetermined amount is utilized to control the feed of the materials or the air pressure or both so as to accommodate changes in the character of the materials under treatment. The apparatus described comprises a jigging table 1, Fig. 2, which is provided with an arm 120, preferably adjustably weighted at 122, lying on the surface of the material and secured to a rotary shaft 121. The feed mechanism and air valves are adjusted by reversible electric motors, and a drum 138 on the shaft 121 carries two sets of contacts separated by an insulated zone which are brought into play as the arm 120 rises or falls to drive the motors in the required direction. Instead of a single arm, a number may be disposed across the width of the table and be adapted to actuate a number of switches in series so as to prevent actuation of the control devices by merely local variations in the depth of the bed. The control arm and associated parts are carried by a vertically adjustable plate 150. Switches may be included in the circuits of the control motors so that any one or more may be thrown out of use if desired. Mechanical or pneumatic means may be used for transmitting the variations in depth to the control means.
