Vertical-cutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed. - Relates to the cutting- mechanism of a machine for slitting web material, and particularly to that type of mechanism comprising blunt cutting-disks coacting with a backing-roller of hardened metal &c. The invention consists in the mounting of the cutting- disks 19, and in the use of a backing-roller composed of a number of tubular sections 18 mounted on a core shaft 17. The disks 19 are carried in the bifurcated ends of bars 69 supported on a rail 71 adapted to be moved by an eccentric 72 in vertical guides to throw the cutters into and out of operation. Each cutter is made to bear resiliently on the roller 18 by a spring 78 mounted in a pocket 79 in the bar 69 and provided with an abutment 80 engaging the underside of a bar 81, which is adapted to be moved in guides 82 to facilitate access to the cutters. Each cutter-bar 69 may be disposed within a forked guiding - member 77, Fig. 4, laterally adjustable on the rail 71, to prevent lateral displacement of the cutter; or a gang- ' spacer ' 202, Fig. 5, consisting of a number of such guides regularly or irregularly arranged, may be used for a series of cutters. The roller 18 is driven to feed the web, the cutting-disks being driven by frictional contact therewith.
