Masts. - Sailing- vessels are fitted with a a mast, which is pivoted towards its lower end and can be swung towards the wind by mechanism operated from a capstan; at the same time, it moves a ballast weight towards the weather side of the vessel. The lower end of the mast a is fitted in a movable socket c in a block d, which is provided with cushioning - pistons f. The mast is swung over to the weather side of the vessel by means of a capstan j, and in doing so operates a vertical shaft i by means of a projecting arm i<2>. The upper end of this shaft is fitted with a lever arm l which turns the weight k about the shaft m so that the weight is moved to the same side of the ship as the mast. A screwed spindle r is provided to adjust the tautness of the rigging.
