Gas or explosivevapour engines. - The improvements are applicable to two or four stroke cycle engines, which have two cylinders with h a common combustion chamber 24 between them. In two - stroke cycle engines, according to one method of working, the piston uncovers exhaust ports 18 towards the end of its out-stroke, and a charge of air which has been drawn into the pump 8 through the valve 10 is forced through the cylinders and the cam-actuated exhaust valves 15 on the in-stroke. The remaining air is compressed, and a charge of oil is forced into it by air compressed into a reservoir 30 by the pump 8, after its piston has covered the valve 11. Governing is effected by a stepped cam which opens a valve 20 and allows a certain quantity of air to escape after the exhaust valve 15 has closed, the oil charge being similarly controlled by a stepped stop 41 which limits the stroke of the oil-pump piston 39. The oil pump has a movable barrel 34, which dips into the oil reservoir 35 and receives a charge of oil through the port 42 owing to its piston being arrested. On the up-stroke it raises its port 42 into the cavity 36, when the piston is forced inwards by impinging against the stop 40 and expels the oil, which is swept by air from the reservoir 30 and pipe 33 through the mixing chambers 22 into the combustion chamber 24. The volume of the combustion chamber is adapted to suit a diminished charge by a piston 50, and the cylinders are cooled by drawing the air charge through their jackets 45 and by injecting water by a pump 26 operated by the valve 20. According to other methods of working, the pump 8 and ports 18 are dispensed with and the new charge is drawn in on the end of the out-stroke, or the charge may expand below atmospheric pressure, which assists the piston to return, or the vacuum in this last case may be destroyed by a relief valve to allow the piston to pass the dead centre. In four-stroke cycle engines, the pump and ports 18 are dispensed with, the air is drawn directly into the cylinders by a pipe 53, and the valves 15 and 20 are suitably timed.
