Screwing.-A die for use in turret lathes, or similar machines i n which the stock and tools are fed towards one another, is arranged to be released after cutting a predetermined length of thread. The shank b, Figs. 1 and 3, has a head a with a cross slideway a<1> in which are slides c carrying the cutters d. The slides are engaged by the ball ends of levers g, pivoted on the head and having adjustable stop pieces h on their rear ends. A block k on a lever i pivoted at i<1> engages between the pieces h to hold the cutters in the cutting position. When the required length of thread has been cut, a pin i<2> on the lever i engages a fixed stop and retracts the block k, allowing the cutters to be forced apart by springs f. After the-withdrawal of the die, the cutters and block k are reset by the vertical movement of a pin with a conical head which opens out the pieces h. The pin may be raised by a cam surface on the turret as the latter rotates. The lever i is pressed forward by a spring i<3>. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the cutters are adjusted on the slides by screws 10, the slides being directly operated through the levers g by inclined slots 16 in an extension of the block k engaging pins on the levers. An aperture a<2> in the head allows chips to escape.
