Improvements in or relating to thermostatically controlled valves for gas cooker ovens

[Class 126] [Also in Group XXIX] In a thermostatically operated valve for gas cookers in which the valve casing is mounted at the back of the oven and the usual thermostat rod and tube extend through the oven space to a rotatable setting head mounted at the front of the oven, the setting head is either mounted independently of the thermostat and connected thereto by a part slidably keyed to a screwthreaded member which engages the thermostat rod and screws into the thermostat tube or a part secured thereto, or the setting head is mounted on a stem carried by the thermostat tube which can be adjusted by screwing its rear end in or out of the valve casing. As shown in Fig. 1, the valve casing 10 is in one piece and is mounted outside a casting 11 at the back of the cooker so as to permit limited universal adjustment by part spherical surfaces 12, 13. The thermostat tube 20 is screwed into the inner end of the valve casing and the rod 21 abuts a disc 22 which carries a sealing bellows 23. The other end of the rod 21 abuts an adjusting screw 31 in a sleeve 32 fixed to the front end of the thermostat tube 20. The setting head comprises (1) an indicating dial 25 visible through an aperture 28 in a visor 24 pressed out in the front of the cooker frame, (2) a spindle 29 to which the dial is secured by a sleeve 26 and a set screw 34, and (3) and adjusting knob 27. The spindle 29 has a tongue 30 projecting into a slot in the screw 31. Resilient washers are arranged on either side of the visor 24 between the dial 25 and a collar through which the set screw 34 can pass at any of a number of holes. The adjustment can be preserved after calibration and before mounting in the oven by a set screw 33 which is subsequently removed. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the visor 54 is a separate plastic moulding removable as a unit with the indicating dial 55, the knob 58 and the setting spindle 52 and secured to the front of the cooker by wing bolts 56. The tongue 51 on the setting spindle is wedge-shaped and the adjustment between the screw 50 and the thermostat tube 49 is locked temporarily after calibration by a screwed bush 53 and a lock nut 53a the bush being subsequently backed away from the enlarged head of the screw 50 to the position shown. In a further modification, the setting spindle adjusts the position of the thermostat tube relative to the inner end of the valve casing and means are provided for locking this adjustment temporarily after calibration. To ensure alignment between the valve and the_ setting head, the setting spindle and the inner end of the valve casing are mounted in aligned holes in spaced depending lugs integral or rigid with the crown of the oven. In a further form, alignment is secured by mounting the valve casing in an aperture in the cooker frame giving appreciable radial clearance.
