Relates to apparatus for ascertaining the relative height of an aircraft from the ground or from another aircraft. As shown, a ground station includes a transmitter 1 provided with a scanning aerial 2 which may form part of a standard radar installation. A pressure capsule 4, which gives a measure of height, or alternatively a manual adjustment 5 control a coder 3 which in turn modulates the normal radar pulses as by delaying each primary pulse by an amount characteristic of the height to be transmitted, these pulses being transmitted at a much lower power than the normal radar pulses and the separation between the strong and weak pulses being indicative of height. Normally the coder 3 is adjusted by the "offsetter" 5 to transmit a signal representative of the height at which the aircraft is expected to be, and the aircraft carries a receiver 6 which passes the coded signal to a gate 7. The height of the aircraft as measured by a pressure capsule 8 controls a coder 9. The undelayed primary pulses from the receiver 6 are passed to the coder 9 which delays them by an amount dependent upon height. If the height of the aircraft corresponds with that received from the ground station the signal from the coder 9 will reach the gate 7 at the same time as the weaker pulse received via the receiver 6 and the gate will operate a responder transmitter 10 operating upon a different frequency to that of the transmitter 1, to transmit the signal from the coder 9. The response signal is received at the ground station by an aerial 11 mechanically coupled to the aerial 2 and via a receiver 12 is passed to a gate 13 similar to the gate 7 and thence to a display device 14. If the display device is fed by the primary radar in addition, the differentiation between the reflected primary radar pulses and the transponded pulses may be made by the different intensity of the pips on the cathode ray tube. Alternatively a tube may be used having a phosphor which has a colour dependent upon the degree of excitation. Two separate display devices may be used and may be superimposed by a suitable optical system. If desired, the response may be coded with further items, e.g. call sign, course and speed, and the gate 7 biased as soon as a response transmission is initiated to prevent the gate being re-activated on the reception of the next interrogation unless the response transmission has been completed. Specifications 874,261, 874,262 and 874,263 are referred to.
