Bayesian approaches optionally may be implemented in certain example embodiments in an attempt to improve moisture detection accuracy. For instance, models of various types of disturbances may be developed and, based on live data and a priori information known about the model, a probability of the model being accurate is calculated. If a threshold value is met, the model may be considered a match and, optionally, a corresponding appropriate action may be taken.

The isolated section 28 of the coating 26 comprises a first plurality of electrodes 30 and a second plurality of electrodes 32, the first 30 and second 32 plurality of electrodes being parallel, interdigitized or interleaved and spaced from one another. A system and/or method for sensing the presence of moisture (e.g., rain) and/or other material(s) on a window such as a vehicle window (e.g., vehicle windshield, sunroof or backlite). In certain example embodiments, a plurality of sensing capacitors are supported by a window such as a vehicle windshield, the capacitors each having a different field and/or pattern. A sensing circuit outputs an analog signal that is based on and/or related to the capacitances of one or more of the sensing capacitors. In certain example embodiments, a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) mountable in or on a vehicle window is provided. First and second sensing circuits are formed on opposing sides of the flexible PCB, with each said sensing circuit comprising a plurality of different fractal structures. A ground plane is located between the first and second sensing circuits, with the ground plane being arranged so as to decouple the first and second capacitor arrays and to shield the first capacitor array from fields emanating from the second capacitor array and vice versa. The electronic device is configured to detect moisture on an exterior surface of the vehicle window, humidity on an interior surface of the vehicle window, and EMI.

The wiper control includes a circuit (2) which stores the signal from the sensor immediately after the windshield wiper has passed the sensor. The signal is compared with the signal coming directly from the detector using a comparator (3). If a certain change is detected, the amplifier (4) is activated which starts the wiper motor via a relay (5). The detector can be of the capacitive type.

The sensor for measuring rain on a vehicle windscreen (2) has two main electrodes (1,1') with connections (3,3') set at some distance from one another within the area cleared by the windscreen wipers when in use. These are connected to an evaluation circuit for measuring resistance proportional to the dampness. For determining any shunt resistance caused by back-flow or clearance on the screen an auxiliary electrode (5) is situated at an equal distance from each of the main electrodes but outside the wiper area, close to the upper edge (4) of the screen. This is also connected to the evaluation circuit. It ensures measurements of greater accuracy.

Such techniques may be used in connection with a light sensor. In certain example embodiments, a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) includes a light sensor comprising a light sensor flip-chip, with the light sensor flip-chip including at least two light sensor arrays, and with each said sensor array being configured to sense light of a predetermined wavelength. An adhesive bonds the light sensor to the PCB. A hole is formed in the PCB and the opaque layer so as to allow the light sensor arrays to see through the hole formed in the PCB and the opaque layer. A state of the vehicle lights is settable in dependence on the light sensor. The PCB is located in or is supported by the vehicle windshield.

A rain sensor (10) for a windshield (12) having two sets of electroconductive coatings (22, 24 and 34, 36) on opposing major surfaces of the outer glass ply of a windshield. The first set of coatings (22 and 24) on the outer major surface of the ply (14) are electrically insulated from but in close proximity to each other. The second set of electroconductive coatings (34 and 36) are positioned within the windshield between the glass plies (14 and 16) and are electrically connected to a signal generator (46) and receiver (48). Water contacting the outer surface of the glass ply (14) changes the nature of an electrical signal passing through the first pair of electroconductive coatings (22 and 24). In response to the altered signal, a controller (50) actuates a windshield wiper arrangement (66) to clear the viewing area of the windshield.
