SWADDLING DEVICE

A swaddling device is described. The swaddling device is Y-shaped pod shaped and configured to substantially enclose a baby. The device includes sleeves having at their ends foldover mitten cuffs or similar selectively openable fasteners. The cuffs allow a caregiver to expose the hand or hands of the baby so as to provide skin-to-skin contact. Alternatively, the caregiver can close the cuffs if scratching is a concern. The device is shaped to provide support and snugness for the baby in its mid-section, while also providing sufficient space for hips and knees to flex. The design of the Swaddle Sack with swaddle snugness provides support and partial suppression of the Moro Reflex without arm restraints and allowing sufficient range of motion for baby's upper section which will reduce risk of suffocation for baby in the event that baby rolls over to prone position, because baby will be able to use his or her arms to reposition his or her head to get access to air.

A garment for swaddling a baby includes an elongate shell having an outer surface, and an inner surface opposite the outer surface defining an interior volume for receiving the arms, legs, and trunk of a baby therein. The shell has a head end, a foot end opposite the head end, lateral sides extending between the head end and the foot end, and a neck opening at the head end for receiving a neck of the baby. The garment also includes a backboard attached to the elongate shell between the head end and the foot end for preventing the baby from rolling over when the baby is swaddled within the elongate shell. The backboard includes an elongate body for supporting a trunk of the baby. The body has a first face facing the baby when the baby is swaddled within the elongate shell and a second face opposite the first face.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR INFANT SWADDLE TRANSITION AND ALTERNATIVE

The disclosure provides infant swaddling device or system in the form of two sleeves to help dampen the moro reflex—one for each arm—with the option of a non-flexible backing (or splint) and weighting. This device safely mimics the swaddling effect by adequately reducing the moro (twitching) reflex and flailing of arms, thus helping baby sleep for longer periods of time. The infant swaddle device may eliminate or reduce the risk of suffocation or overheating that other swaddle transition suits, garments, methods, or devices pose. This device can be used as a swaddle alternative; in conjunction of a swaddle blanket or sack, pod, etc. or without; or as a transition device to easily wean infants from the swaddle.

An apparatus to hold babies in a preferred sleeping position is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a mattress pad 10 and a sleeping pouch 12 attached to the mattress pad. The mattress pad comprises an arrangement of straps 16, 20, 24 for secure and easy fitting to the mattress, including side straps 16, 20 and at least one top or end strap 24. The straps wrap around the mattress and securing means 40, 46, 52, 58 are secured together on the underside. The pouch comprises base and upper layers which are fastened together. An apparatus for limiting body motion as a patient lies down includes a pad shaped to prevent the patient from rolling over the pad. The pad is shaped so that it projects outwardly 3 inches or more from the patient when attached to the human body. The base of the pad contacts the patient's skin or sleep clothes. The pad has sidewalls which make an angle of greater than approximately 35 degrees with respect to the base. A removable, washable covering is placed on the pad. An attachment mechanism associated with the pad and the covering attach the pad and cover to the human body. The attachment mechanism can be a hook-and-loop fastener, a sports bra type device, a series of straps, a series of snaps, or a series of hooks. In each instance, the pad can be positioned at several positions on the body, including positions to the right or left of the patient's medial plane. More than one pad can also be used to limit the body motion of a patient. One can be positioned on the posterior side of a patient and another can be positioned on an anterior side of a patient. In this way, the patient motion may be limited to lying on one side rather than discouraging rest while in the supine position.
