The outer housing has a first port 108 and a second port 109 extending at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis and provided on opposing sides of the outer housing. A channel is formed between the inside of the outer housing and the outside of the inner housing to allow the passage of fluid and/or a biopsy probe. Each port may have a tab providing a female luer lock fitting. The external profile of the inner housing may taper (136, figure 5) opposite the ports. A bung (150, figure 7A) may seal the proximal end whilst providing access for an endoscope. An oblique distal-end cap (180, figure 8) may alter the field of view. Each housing may have a stepped portion at its distal end to receive a sheath (200,205, figure 2).

The apparatus also includes a shape calculator that calculates shape information regarding a shape of the flexible tube based on the state information, an external force calculator that calculates external force information including magnitude of an external force received by the flexible tube based on the state information, and a stiffness controller that controls the variable stiffness portion in accordance with the shape information so that the magnitude of the external force received by the flexible tube becomes smaller than a reference value. 1.
