Die Erfindung betrifft ein Intubationsinstrument zur Intubation eines Patienten. Dieses hat einen Schaft mit einem unter einem Winkel von 90 Grad angeordneten Endstück. Weiterhin hat das Intubationsinstrument einen Kanal mit näherungsweise kreisförmigem Querschnitt mit einem Innendurchmesser in einem Beeich von 2 mm bis 15 mm und seitlicher Öffnung, der sich über die gesamte Länge des Kanals erstreckt. Das Intubationsinstrument kann aufgrund seiner kleinen Abmessungen auch unter schwierigen Bedingungen leicht in den Rachen eines Patienten eingeführt werden. Das Intubationsinstrument selbst dient zur Aufnahme und Führung eines Bougie, der durch das Intubationsinstrument bis in den Kehlkopf durchgeschoben werden kann. Durch den seitlichen Längsschlitz kann der Bougie danach leicht aus dem Intubationsinstrument seitlich herausgezogen werden. Schließlich kann noch ein Endotrachealtubus über den Bougie bis in den Kehlkopf eingebracht werden.

AIRWAY An airway for insertion into the mouth and pharynx for assisting intubation comprising an elongate body having a straight section joined to a curved section and a face plate secured to the straight section at its free end. The body of the airway has an elongate U-shaped central channel open at the top and a pair of elongate open-sided U-shaped channels on either side of the central channel. The upper defining wall of one of the open-sided channels has an opening therein through which a tubular member inserted in the channel may be guided for accommodating suctioning of the nasopharynx. A tubular member may be intubated in the other side channel for simultaneously suctioning the hypopharynx.

A curved guide having a mask and a ventilation port is inserted into the patient's mouth and upper airway. The patient is initially resuscitated by supplying a flow of air/oxygen through the mask and simultaneously applying cardiac chest compressions. An endotracheal tube is inserted over the distal end of a fiber optic probe. Resuscitation continues without interruption while the fiber optic probe and endotracheal tube are advanced along the guide into the patient's airway, thereby allowing the physician to carefully guide the fiber optic probe and endotracheal tube to a position past the larynx while resuscitation continues.

A curved guide is inserted into the patient's mouth and upper airway so that its distal end is positioned above the larynx. The wand and endotracheal tube are then advanced along the guide until the distal end of the endotracheal tube passes through the larynx and the light source is externally observable at a predetermined location through the anterior tracheal wall.

A new type of airway, the cuffed oro-pharyngeal airway (COPA) (10), is described, which may be used as a less cumbersome alternative to face mask/oral airway technique for maintenance of general anesthesia. The airway includes an elongated tube (12) having a length such that the proximal end (20) is adapted to be disposed adjacent to, but outside, the oral cavity of the patient, and the distal end (36) is adapted to be disposed in the lower pharynx of the patient, above the epiglottis (26). An inelastic, inflatable cuff (14) is mounted to the tube adjacent the distal end (36). On inflation, the inflatable cuff displaces the soft palate against the nasal pharynx to seal off the nasal passages and defines a seal between the tube and the pharyngeal wall. The inflatable cuff (14) also displaces the base of the patient's tongue (30), thereby locking the tube in the pharynx and displacing the patient's epiglottis (26) to a more open disposition for more effective anesthesia gas delivery to the lungs.

A method for use in an endotracheal intubation procedure, the method including: inserting an intubation guide into a mouth of a subject, the intubation guide including an elongate body defining a passageway configured for receiving a blade portion of an intubation device; covering the mouth of the subject with a ventilation mask including: a ventilation port connected to a ventilator, and an intubation port for receiving the blade portion of the intubation device; ventilating the subject using the ventilation mask; and while ventilation of the subject continues: inserting the blade portion of the intubation device into the passageway through the intubation port; positioning a distal tip of the blade portion proximate to the larynx of the subject; and advancing an endotracheal tube along the blade portion of the intubation device through the intubation port and the intubation guide into a trachea of the subject.

An oral airway for providing an air passage to a patient's trachea including two embodiments. In both embodiments, the oral airway includes a curved section and a straight section with the curved section having spaced-apart curved upper and lower members and the straight section having spaced-apart planar upper and lower members with the same width. In the first embodiment, the curved upper member has the same width as the planar upper member with the curved lower member having a greater width than the width of the lower planar member. In the second embodiment, the width of the curved lower member is greater than the width of the planar lower member and the distance between the curved upper and lower members is greater than the distance between the planar upper and lower members.
