The spindles c, d are fed axially by levers g, h operated by a cam shaft geared to the spindle d, the work turret l is provided with hexagonal or other bushes to suit the work and the thrust of the work is resisted by abutments o, p that may be axially movable and may be smaller than the work to pass within any peripheral burr that may exist. The turret may be replaced by a link chain or equivalent work-holder. Fig. 6 shows special bushings for use with bolts, a bifurcated abutment q being provided in this instance. Tube ends such as those of boiler tube banks, are prepared utilizing any of various combinations of processes which include a step of micro-diameter tube film removal from a portion of a tube end, including an area below a beveled segment, or segment to be beveled. The micro-diameter film removal step provides the tube with an exposed, clean metal surface which is conducive to a subsequent welding or bonding operation performed on the tube. Preferably, the process is performed with a tube milling tool having interchangeable milling or cutting heads. A specialized milling head is also disclosed and, in one embodiment, is at least used to perform the micro-diameter tube film removal step. Advantageously, the tube film removal milling head also removes a weld overlay on one or both sides of a tube in one embodiment. The tube film removal milling head includes an attached blade having a planar face configuration which enables tube film removal.

A jig and tool are provided for rotating the tool around a pipe or pipeline, for truing the pipe end. An operator can easily installation the jig into the pipe end, with or without the cutting tool installed thereto. The tool can be manually or motor driven for rotation about the jig and the pipe end. The attachment of the tool to the jig enables alignment of the tool's cutting face with the pipe end, with angular and axial adjustment available for obtaining a profile suitable for welding to like pipe ends. In an embodiment, the tool can track the pipe diameter to retain alignment despite out-of-round dimensional variation. The tool is operated and rotated about the pipe end to remove material and, as necessary, the tool is adjusted into the pipe end and the rotation about the pipe end is repeated for incremental removal of material therefrom.

SUBSEA MACHINE TOOL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A subsea machine tool for preparing the end of a bare piece of pipe in a subsea location for receiving an overfitting coupling. The embodiment of the invention described in the application includes a support assembly adapted for raising and lowering in a body of water. A pipe clamp is attached to each end of the support assembly for clamping the pipe at two axially spaced apart positions. A split frame is supported by the support assembly for axial travel thereon, which frame is adapted for opening and closing about the section of the pipe intermediate the clamps. A split ring gear assembly is supported by the frame for rotation therein and about the pipe section, The split ring gear is in the form of a spool assem-bly wherein an involute gear forms one flange of the spool and a face plate forms the other flange. The spool is supported about the exterior thereof by a split fixed ring which in turn is supported by the frame. The fixed ring has mounted thereon one or more hydraulic motors which are arranged for rotating the ring gear relative to the fixed ring. The face plate has mounted thereon for rotation therewith work means in the form of a milling machine which is radially movable and which serves the purpose of milling off any protrusions on the external sur-face of the pipe, as for example, a longitudinal weld seam. Another tool is mounted on the face plate for sensing out-of-roundness of the pipe and the concentricity of the pipe rela-tive to the ring gear, and for providing a read-out of any variations in roundness or concentricity, which read-out may then be used to operate the milling machine to remove the dis-continuity. In addition, the face plate has mounted thereon a rotary cutting tool for making a circumferential cut about the pipe, to thereby sever the same. The tool is adapted for remote operation such that deep water operations can be accom-plished.

The micro-diameter film removal step provides the tube with an exposed, clean metal surface which is conducive to a subsequent welding or bonding operation performed on the tube. Preferably, the process is performed with a tube milling tool having interchangeable milling or cutting heads. A specialized milling head is also disclosed and, in one embodiment, is at least used to perform the micro-diameter tube film removal step. Advantageously, the tube film removal milling head also removes a weld overlay on one or both sides of a tube in one embodiment. The tube film removal milling head includes an attached blade having a planar face configuration which enables tube film removal.
