[Class 60] A guard, for a high-speed abrasive wheel, has ducts through which cooling water passes to the wheel, the arrangement being such that a water pressure is developed against the face of the wheel. The guard comprises two portions, each of which is formed with passages d, e, through which water flows from inlet f to semi-circular passages g, h, formed on the inner faces of the guard. The passages g, h, connect with wedge-shaped radial grooves k, Fig. 4, formed on the inner faces of the guard. Due to the relation of grooves k to the direction of rotation of the wheel i water pressure is developed against the face of the wheel, thereby cooling it and forming a hydraulic support on either side of the wheel.

The top sealing plates (8,18) are moved by a drive to seal the gap, according to the oil pressure inside the housing by an automatic control system.
