The kitchen utensil for slicing vegetables is designed to be driven by a separate driving unit. The utensil consists of a housing (1) with a lid (2). The lid (2) has a tubular extension (13) with an opening to receive the vegetables. The vegetables are pressed downwards against the rotating blade (6) by an arm (4) which is guided by a linear roller bearing (5) on a vertical pillar (3). The rotating blade (6) is driven from the square ended driving shaft through a couplingm (10,10'). The two halves of the coupling are kept in engagement by the lid (2). When the lid (2) is removed the spring (9) separates the couplingm halves (10,10') so that the blade automatically comes to rest. USE/ADVANTAGE - The stopping of the blade rotation eliminates the risk of injury to the user.

In order to prevent the knives being advanced too far, and becoming damaged by contact with other machine parts, a safety device is provided. This includes a blade positioned near the path of the knife edges to be struck by a knife if the latter is advanced too far. The resultant movement of the blade is amplified by a lever system and is used to trigger a microswitch in the cutter drum drive circuit, whereby when a knife is advanced too far the cutter drum is stopped. The advancing mechanism for the knives includes a ratchet device driven by pulses of compressed air via a piston and cylinder device.

In a tobacco cutting machine where tobacco is cut by knives mounted on a rotating drum, the knives are advanced as they are worn away. In order to prevent the knives being advanced too far, and becoming damaged by contact with other machine parts, a safety device is provided. This includes a blade positioned near the path of the knife edges to be struck by a knife if the latter is advanced too far. The resultant movement of the blade is amplified by a lever system and is used to trigger a microswitch in the cutter drum drive circuit, whereby when a knife is advanced too far the cutter drum is stopped. The advancing mechanism for the knives includes a ratchet device driven by pulses of compressed air via a piston and cylinder device.

A safety system for a machine having a danger zone comprising:(a) units including a sending unit having an inductor and a receiving unit having a magnetic field sensor with one or more transducers arranged to provide one or more transducer signals representing the strength of a magnetic field induced in the sensor, a first one of units being adapted for mounting to a body part, a second one of units being adapted for mounting adjacent to the machine adjacent the danger zone, at least one of the units being operative to send or receive magnetic fields omnidirectionally;(b) a drive circuit connected to the inductor, the drive circuit being operative to apply an time-varying current in the inductor having a drive characteristic such that the inductor emits a time-varying magnetic field having the drive characteristic; and(c) a detector circuit connected to the magnetic field sensor, the detector circuit being operative to provide a warning signal when the one or more transducer signals indicate that the magnitude of a magnetic field in the sensor varying with the drive characteristic exceeds a threshold value.2. In another aspect, an apparatus includes a first mount member coupleable to a controllably positionable mounting surface of the waterjet cutting system, a second mount member coupleable to the cutting head and disengageably coupled to the first mount member, and a sensing circuit having a plurality of first conductive elements disposed on the first mount member and a plurality of second conductive elements disposed on the second mount member. In the event of a collision between the cutting head and an obstruction, the second mount member disengages from the first mount member to prevent breakage of the cutting head. Following the collision, the second mount member is quickly and easily re-engaged with the first mount member without time-consuming re-calibration. In one embodiment, re-engagement of the second end first mount members is automatically performed by a biasing member.

The protective circuit for a band saw cutter produces signals for automatic braking of the electric drive motor. A balancing circuit controls the driving and braking circuit and comprises a complex voltage divider with capacitive components. The circuit is loaded by an oscillator voltage and is connected via a first pulse former to the first input of a coincidence circuit. The second input is connected via a second pulse former with the oscillator voltage. Within the complex voltage divider, resistances are connected in parallel with the condensers. The two inputs of a sum-and-difference amplifier are connected to both parts of the voltage divider.

The protective system operates with powered cutting tools to prevent injury to the user. The tool has cutters (2) driven by a motor (3). The power supply (5,7) to the motor is controlled by a switch (4). The switch can be operated by an electronic safety circuit (9). The user covers the part of the body to be protected with a conductive metal mesh, for example a chain mail glove to protect the hand. The mesh (6) is connected to the negative side of the supply, while an auxiliary connection is made between the positive side of the supply and the tool. An electronic circuit (9) detects closure of the circuit through the tool and mesh caused by the tool coming into contact with the mesh.
