A method and apparatus for forming a shrinkable sleeve of plastic material and applying it as a label to a glass or plastic container. The plastic is fed from a source, cut to successive lengths, wrapped about successive mandrels and sealed to form each sleeve. Thereafter each sleeve is transferred from the mandrel onto an overlying container. The mandrels are circumferentially positioned on a turret, and a combined heat seal bar and tucker bar is associated with each mandrel to bond the overlapping ends of the severed length of plastic material to one another. A stripper transfers each sleeve that has been so formed from a position on the mandrel axially onto an overlying aligned container while the path of the container overlies the respective mandrel for a portion of its movement by the turret.

The present invention relates to an apparatus for forming and applying a plastic sleeve to a rigid base article, such as a glass bottle. A blank of plastic is wrapped and seamed around the fingers of a stripper sleeve enclosing a mandrel. The stripper sleeve holding the plastic sleeve is extended along its longitudinal axis telescopically over a preheated bottle positioned above and longitudinally aligned with the mandrel and the stripper sleeve. Clamping means, such as a plurality of vacuum fingers, extend downwardly and hold the plastic sleeve in position while the stripper sleeve with its fingers is retracted to its original position. The heat of the bottle causes the plastic sleeve to shrink slightly such that it is held in position relative to the bottle when the clamping means is removed. The bottle and plastic sleeve are then subjected to a thermoconstrictive operation.

In the packaging field certain types of packages are manufactured from pre-shaped, cylindrical casings made from a heat-shrinkable laminate. The casings are formed by winding a material sheet around a mandrel and subsequent sealing together of the overlapping ends of the sheet. However, because of the stiffness of the material the leading end of the sheet protrudes tangentially from the mandrel during the winding and prevents an accurate adaptation of the material sheet to the surface of the mandrel. According to the method and arrangement of this invention this disadvantage is avoided in that the leading end of the sheet is pre-heated on the side facing the mandrel to such a degree, that the shrinking is initialled. The shrinking of one side only results in that the leading end of the material sheet is given a curved shape with a radius that coincides with the radius of the mandrel, and consequently the leading end is no longer an obstacle to the winding.

An apparatus for fabricating a container made of foam sheet material. The apparatus includes a mandrel carrying drum that revolves about its longitudinal axis of symmetry. The drum contains a plurality of individual mandrels in radial alignment. Each mandrel revolves about its longitudinal axis as it forms a cylindrically shaped container blank. The drum carries the mandrels in an arcuate path, thus permitting work to be performed on the container blank as it passes a series of work stations. A method of forming a container from foam sheet material is set forth wherein a severed sheet material is attached to a mandrel. The mandrel rotates about its axis to form a cylindrically shaped blank as the mandrel itself is being moved in an arcuate path. While positioned on the mandrel, the container blank is worked upon at a plurality of work stations, thus producing a final container with an end closure which may be apertured.

A machine installation for the manufacture of a thick-walled insulating pipe of elastic, laminatable foamed synthetic resin sheet material, includes an apparatus for effecting the lamination of a foamed synthetic resin sheet material to form a multilayer insulating pipe having a length corresponding to the sheet width of the sheet of foam material and a finishing unit. The laminating apparatus has an expandable and rotatable mandrel equipped with a pneumatic expanding means and an infinitely variable drive mechanisms for rotating the mandrel to wrap the sheet material thereon, and a pressure roller which can be urged against the mandrel. The roller is movable pneumatically by a telescopic holder, and the mandrel is associated with a pivotably mounted burner and a cutter. The unit for finishing the initially formed pipe product has a shaft rotatable in timed segments with clamping jaws attached to holding arms that are spaced from the shaft; the jaws being capable of receiving an unfinished insulating pipe product and being opened and closed pneumatically. One holding arm is associated with a band cutter for trimming the end faces of the insulating pipe product, and another holding arm is associated with a blade for slitting the insulating pipe along its length.

A method and apparatus utilizes a flexographic printing cylinder or print sleeve that is functionally adapted to have a photopolymeric printing plate removably attached to it. A micro-cutting mechanism is also provided that is axially aligned with the printing cylinder or print sleeve whereby a cutting tool, such as a knife, blade, straight edge or laser, can be drawn across the printing cylinder or print sleeve to cut a portion of the printing plate that is mounted thereto. In the method and apparatus of the present invention, and after the printing plate is attached at a point along the cylinder or sleeve, the micro-cutting mechanism is placed proximally to the printing cylinder or sleeve and the cutting tool is drawn along a line and across a portion of the printing plate. This forms a first cut through the plate. The cut may be at an angle relative to the perpendicular of the cylinder or sleeve, or the cut may be perpendicular to the surface of the cylinder or sleeve. The cylinder or sleeve is then advanced precisely to the point that a second cut can be made through the plate. In this fashion, the first and second cuts result in plate ends that align such that the break in the plate is minimized.

A joint and method for producing a joint in an endovascular graft. In one embodiment, a flap of a flexible material portion of an endovascular graft is folded about a portion of an expandable member to form a loop portion. The flap is secured in the loop configuration so that tensile force on the expandable member is transferred into a shear force on the fixed portion of the flap.
