Причем углерод связующего имеет скорость ядерного превращения из 14 C в 14 N от 900 до 920 превращений в час на грамм углерода в связующем. Such compositions can be applied to substrates, such as paper-based materials, to impart enhanced grease/oil resistance. The complementary material can act to provide the composition with enhanced fatigue resistance relative to layers that solely utilize the cellulose-based polymer, and can preferably have limited leaching from the composition. Examples of complementary materials include polymers, such as poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl alcohol), plasticizers, and combinations of these materials. Such compositions can be prepared as a treatment formulation or coating material, which can be dissolved or suspended in a solvent. The compositions may also be melted and applied without a solvent. The formulations can be a water-based system, or an emulsion. The films may be applied to paper products as part of the papermaking process, or as post treatments on a coating machine.

Emulsions are provided which are useful in imparting water-resistance to lignocellulosic products. In one embodiment, the emulsions contain a nonsaponifiable wax, a saponified wax, an alkyl phenol component, a dispersant/surfactant such as a salt of polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, and a carboxymethylcellulose. Such emulsions may be added to hot, even boiling, water without the emulsion separating or curdling. Various embodiments are stable for extended periods of time when stored at room temperature, do not require the addition of a preservative biocide to avoid contributing to biodegradation in a lignocellulosic product. The emulsions are pourable liquids at room temperature. Optionally, the emulsions may be added to lignocellulosic products with a preservative to inhibit the preservative from leaching out.

A production method which comprises: (1) an alkali cellulose formation reaction step wherein a mixed solvent that contains an alcohol having 3 or less carbon atoms and water at a mixing ratio (mass ratio) of from 75:25 to 95:5 is used and the alkali concentration relative to water is 25-40% by mass; (2) an etherification reaction step wherein a reaction is carried out in the presence of an excess alkali of 0.2-0.5 mol per unit of an anhydroglucose of the cellulose; (3) a neutralization step wherein an acid is added after the etherification reaction so that the pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 6.0-8.0; and (4) a heating step wherein the mixed solvent is removed and an alkali is added after the neutralization step so that the pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 8.0-9.0, and subsequently, a heat treatment is carried out at 40-70°C for 30-120 minutes.
