The terpene oil remaining when the acid is removed from the pinene hydrochloride in the synthesis of camphor is treated with sulphuric or other acid, or an alkali, or a halogen, or air or other oxidizing agent, whereby there are produced sweet-smelling drying oils of higher boiling point. The oils obtained by the halogen treatment also serve as solvents. Catalysts may be present and raised temperatures and pressures may be used. In an example the oil is boiled with caustic potash lye in presence of mercury or copper. The mass is washed with dilute acid, dried, and fractionally distilled. The products are suitable substitutes for linseed oil. Paint vehicles.-Turpentine substitutes for use in paints, varnishes, &c. are made from ordinary petroleum oil. The petroleum is purified by treatment at about 60‹ F. with a saturated solution of salts of tartar or salts of lemon, and with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid or an ester such as ethyl chloride. The petroleum is separated, thinned with methylated spirit, and warmed to 100-160‹ F. Powdered naphthalene and a readily oxidizable essential oil, such as oil from eucalyptus amygdaline or pinus siberica, oil of cloves, amber, or juniper are added. The liquid may also be treated by further additions at about its boiling point of naphthalene and methylated spirit, and, after cooling, of white spirit (waterwhite kerosene) and benzoline which has been rendered non - inflammable by treatment with sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid.

Turpentine, extracting.-Oil of turpentine and water-free colophony are obtained by treating crude turpentine with wet steam or a mist of water, alcohol, or of other harmless liquid, the turpentine being under reduced pressure and at such a temperature not exceeding 90‹ C. as to cause explosive evaporation of the water or like as set out in the parent Specification and in Specification 235,792. Steam or inert gas or vapour may be used as a carrier. In an example, a mist of water at 21‹ C. or wet steam at 30‹ C. is blown through a thin layer of crude French turpentine at 50‹ C. and 20 m.m. pressure, using apparatus described in Specification 277,085. The temperature is raised to 80‹ C. towards the end of the distillation. A clear pale yellow, waterfree resin remains.

Disclosed is a process for extraction of coniferous woods, such as pine, with supercritical fluids to recover tall oil and turpentine, or components thereof. Gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, and lower alkanes or lower alkenes at temperatures above critical and pressures of about 100 psi above critical; i.e., supercritical fluids, are contacted with subdivided wood. The extracted wood is suitable for pulping and subsequent papermaking. The extract-bearing fluid is preferably stripped of the extracts by reducing the pressure in stages, each pressure reduction effecting removal of extracts of a narrowly-defined molecular weight range. The fluid is recompressed and recycled.
