As used, the highly grafted, multi-functional olefin copolymer is effective to reduce a viscosity increase in the lubricating oil composition for the engine.

The lubricating oil composition of the parent Specification comprising a mineral lubricating oil with a small proportion of a polyvalent metal salt of a substituted or non-substituted aromatic monocarboxylic acid and particularly exemplifying the Ca and Zn salts of di-isopropyl salicylic acid is modified in that the additive comprises certain polyvalent metal and lithium salts of an octadecyl salicylic acid, stearyl salicylic acid or of a mixture of alkylated salicylic acids in which the alkyl groups contain 8 to 18 carbon atoms. The polyvalent metals comprise Al, Be, Ba, Ca, Mg, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, and Sn. Oil-soluble basic monovalent metal salts of organic acids are prepared by reacting an oilsoluble monovalent metal salt of an organic acid, dissolved in oil, in the presence of water and/or a water miscible oxygen containing organic liquid, with an oil-insoluble monovalent metal compound, which is formed in situ, in the reaction mixture. Suitable oil-soluble metal salts are those of sulphonic acids, especially petroleum sulphonic acids, carboxylic acids especially alkylated aromatic acids with an alkyl chain of 12 or more carbon atoms, and cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids such as petroleum naphthenic acids. Salts of organic phosphoruscontaining acids or thio-acids may be used. Suitable oils are petroleum fractions (from gasoline up to lubricating oil fractions), benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, and heptane. The invention relates to a method of lubricating a mechanical device (such as an internal combustion engine) with a lubricating composition. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and specific combinations of low soap detergents, dispersants, and/or mixtures thereof, as a minor component. The low soap detergents include alkaline earth metal salicylates, alkaline earth metal sulfonates, or mixtures thereof, all having the same or different total base number (TBN). The total amount of soap delivered by the low soap detergent is less than 0.60 weight percent of the lubricating oil. A lubricating oil composition comprising:greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil of lubricating viscosity, andcalcium, nitrogen, molybdenum and boron, whereina weight ratio of Ca:N in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 1.3 to less than 3.0, a weight ratio of Ca:Mo in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 6.7 to less than 56.3, a weight ratio of Ca:B in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 5.0 to less than 9.8, andthe lubricating oil composition does not contain added magnesium from a magnesium-containing detergent, andwherein the lubricating oil composition is effective to ensure a TCO Temperature Increase of less than 9.0% as measured using the 2015 version of the General Motors dexos1® Turbocharger Coking Test.2.
