Improvements in the manufacture of threads, cords, ropes and like filamentary articles

Номер: GB0001095637A
Автор: FELIX PIERRE
Принадлежит:

Threads, ropes, cords, &c. are manufactured by fibrillating a film of an oriented linear synthetic polymeric material by false-twisting the film while holding it under tension, and during the false-twisting subjecting it to a sharp change of direction. The film is stretched and then cut into strips, or vice-versa. The strips are false-twisted by means of a spindle having bars as twist locking means. One or more of the fibrillated strips are twisted and, if necessary, a heat or other setting treatment applied to the twisted strands. The film may be composed of a polyamide, polyolefine, polyester, polyvinyl chloride or its derivatives, or a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile.

PRODUCTION OF FILAMENTS

Номер: CA1048215A

The invention relates to the production of fibrous material e.g. stable monofilament or yarn, from a stretched sheet of melt-embossed cold drawable polymeric material e.g. polypropylene. The process involves melt embossing a sheet of the polymer by means of rollers having continuous circumferential grooves e.g. 10 to 300 grooves per inch, to form a flat material having parallel continuous ribs. The embossed sheet is then stretched in a direction parallel to the ribs so as to orient the polymer. Simultaneously or subsequent to the stretching the material between the ribs is split so as to form longitudinal filaments corresponding to the ribs. Splitting may be carried out by twisting the stretched material, passing through an air venturi or winding over grooved rollers, but preferably by applying a transverse stress. The split material in the form of a tape may then be twisted into yarn.

A process for the production of multi-filament material comprises splitting, cutting or slitting a continuously moving strip, tube or sheet of synthetic resinous material orientated in a longitudinal direction into a plurality of strands, adjacent strands being integrally joined together at regularly spaced intervals along the length thereof by bringing a plurality of cutting edges or needles disposed in spaced, parallel and staggered relationship over the surface of a rotating drum consecutively into a cutting relationship with said moving strip, tube or sheet. Suitably said strip or sheet of orientated material has a thickness of 380 microns or less, especially not more than 250 microns. Alternatively, said strip or sheet of oriented material may have a thickness of not greater than 15 thousandths of an inch, and especially a thickness of 10 thousandths of an inch. Specified synthetic materials include polyalkenes, polyamides and polyesters, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, and polyterephthalic esters. Desirably, the said sheet, tube or strip is under tension when it is split, cut or slit. Fibres may be made from such multifilament material and rope, twine, cord, yarn or textile material may be made from such fibres. Multi-filament material produced by the method of the invention or a fibre or yarn produced therefrom may be passed between two relatively moving surfaces for a period of time and under sufficient pressure to produce a bulking effect on the material, fibres or yarn. A scribbling or lapping device is suitably used in such a process. In apparatus as shown (Figure 1A, not reproduced) synthetic resinous material fed into an extruder 10 are heated and extruded through die 12, through which air is simultaneously blown, thus forming a tube 14, which is passed through air cooling ring 16 and nip rollers 18 and the tube 14, in the flattened state, is then passed over a series of tension rolls 1, 2, and 3. A fibrous material for example a non- woven fabric, or a yarn as described in specispecifications 1,114,151 and 1,131,282 respectively, or discrete fibres - is produced by drawing an extruded foamed thermoplastic material to orientate it essentially in one direction, and breaking the walls of, the foam down by the action of a turbulent stream of fluid to form the fibrous material. The composition, production, and drawing of the foamed material is as described in the above mentioned specifications. The fluid may be air, nitrogen, argon, or helium and may contain carborundum particles, or a liquid, which may be a non-solvent for, or cause a partial swelling of, the foamed material, may be used, for example water, acetone, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, benzene, toluene or xylene. The fibrous material may pass through a tube having solid or porous walls - for example of wire gauze. There may be several jets of fluid arranged around the tube or there may be an annular jet. The fluid may be directed in a direction inclined to or opposed to the direction of movement of the material. The fluid treatment may be preceded by a rubbing, rolling, twisting, shaking, or beating treatment, for example by being passed through a nip between a series of reciprocating rollers or between reciprocating bars.

1,234,782. Fibrillating orientated strips and films. COURTAULDS Ltd. 3 Oct., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 45108/67. Heading B5B. An orientated strip or film of a crystalline polymeric material which has been longitudinally orientated to render it fibrillatable is fibrillated by moving it longitudinally past a plurality of fluid jets together extending trans. versely of the moving strip or film and directed at the strip or film. The fluid jets may issue from one or more lines of jet holes aligned transversely across the strip or film. Each line of jet holes may extend across the whole width of the strip or film and may be aligned at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the strip or film. The strip or film may be held under tension against the jet holes as it is moved past them. The fluid jets may be liquid or gaseous but are conveniently jets of air issuing from a line of jet holes aligned transversely across the strip or film. The strip or film may be made of polypropylene. The fibrillated strip or film may be twisted to form a twine or may be chopped transversely to form staple fibres. In the illustrated example a strip 1 (Figs. 1 and 2) of transparent crystalline polypropylene film is stretched in the longitudinal direction at a stretch ratio of 10 : 1 at a temperature of 150‹ C. to a stretched size of 0À5 inch width and 0À002 inch thickness. The strip is then passed in the direction of the arrow A over the face 2 of a jet head 3 at a speed of 100 metres per minute, being pressed against the face 2 by the tensioning rollers 4 and 5. At the same time air at a pressure of 40 p.s.i. is passed into the chamber 6 of the jet head 3 through inlet pipe 7 and emerges from the chamber 6 through two lines of jet holes 8 and 9 in the face 2 as a series of air jets. The holes are 0À005 inch in diameter and are spaced apart in each line by 0À01 inch. As the strip 1 is passed over the lines of holes 8 and 9, the air jets burst through the readily fibrillatable strip to cause the ...

Improvements in or relating to processes for making bulked yarns by the fibrillation of thermoplstic films

1,267,298. Fibrillating films. HERCULES Inc. 29 April, 1970 [6 May, 1969], No. 20709/70. Heading B5B. A process for forming continuous filaments by fibrillating a film and simultaneously bulking the filaments involves feeding a ribbon of longitudinally oriented thermoplastic film having longitudinal parallel striations (Fig. 3) at a predetermined speed, surrounding the ribbon with a jet of fluid at a temperature sufficient to plasticize the ribbon without loss of orientation and directing the fluid jet, and thus the ribbon, into a bulking chamber having an open end opposed to the fluid jet and a cross-sectional area sufficient to permit limited lateral movement of the fluid jet. A screen is moved laterally across and in close proximity to the open end of the chamber at a substantially slower speed than the speed at which the ribbon is fed into the chamber and by thus confining the fluid jet to exhaust through the screen randomly deflects the jet and hence the ribbon laterally within the chamber at a rapid rate and thereby fibrillates the film. The resulting filaments are folded on to the screen and are randomly crimped as they are moved out of the chamber by being compressed against the surface of the screen. Suitable apparatus for the process of the invention is that of U.S. Patent 3,457,611, Figs. 1 (not shown), and 2 in which striated ribbon R is fed through yarn-tube 15 and urged into bulking chamber 14 by a fluid jet, which may be steam under pressure, supplied to capillary tube 13 by way of channels 12, chamber 29 and supply pipe 30, 31. The ribbon is substantially completely fibrillated in chamber 14 by random rapid lateral movement induced by deflection of the jet, and thus the ribbon, from areas of the slowly moving screen 3 which are densely covered with fibrillated filaments to areas which are less densely covered. The filaments then pass under the lower surface 35 of the jet unit 2 and are randomly crimped by the pressure of the jet unit on the screen 3. ...
