A fan with airfoil blades is provided for a regenerative air vacuum street sweeper. The blades are formed using cut and pressed upper and lower panels which are welded at a forward edge to a rod to form the airfoil leading edge and welded at the rear edges to form the airfoil trailing edge. Pins extend laterally outwardly from the rod for mounting each blade in corresponding holes in the front and rear plates of the fan housing. The rotary brush (10) sweeper is mounted at the rear of a tractor (1) and can be lifted for transit by a jack (7, 8) operated folding parallelogram frame (3, 4 5, 6). The brush can oscillate vertically to follow surface irregularities, and can also pivot about a longitudinal axis (A) at a nominal inclination to the horizontal. The brush rotates rapidly within a housing (9) with a skip for dust collection. A current of air drives the dust into the skip, and the frame extends between vertical members fixed to the tractor (1) and the housing (9) respectively. One member (3) can oscillate on a vertical axle (2) and the other member (4) provides the inclined axis (a) about which the housing (9) pivots.

The cleaner is mounted on a self-propelled motorised vehicle. A swivelling connecting arm (18) pivots on the vehicle (20), its other end (22) carrying the cleaning head (36). The cleaning head support (24), fixed to the swivelling arm, carries supporting arms (28,30) at a constant angle, on a turntable (26). The turntable swivels on the head support, carrying a motor driving two contra rotating brushes (32,34), carried on the arms. A suction head (17) is also carried. The turntable may be rotated, carrying a motor, pinions, pulleys and belts, rotating the brushes. The brush arms may be telescopic, with belt tensioning braces. The suction head, downstream of the brushes, may be flexibly connected (16) to the suction system (14). The motor and actuator may be hydraulic.
