As applied to a filter, in which fluid is filtered radially inward through a filter 1, excess pressure acts on the valve member 8 through ports 10 in a fixed plate 4, to by-pass the filter. In another construction, the valve 8 is allowed to close after it has been opened by excess pressure, leaving the gravity operated element 20 in a position to indicate that relief has taken place (Fig. 3, not shown). The cover 16 of both constructions is made from a transparent material to show the position of the ball element 17.

A relief valve for water and gas in blocked toilet pipes operates automatically when the system pressure reaches a high level. It is screwed into the socket provided for cleaning out. A valve with a cone shaped head (26) fits into a body (29) threaded into the socket (10). The stem (24) is loaded by a spring (25) to open at a predetermined pressure. Two bleed holes (23U, 23L) are provided to balance the system against any normally present pressures. The pressure required to keep the valve in the "Relieve" position is less than that required to open it. This ensures complete draining.

A main stage in-line pressure control cartridge. The cartridge selectively controls flow in-line in the same direction. The cartridge is mounted inside a body and has a sliding control sleeve that can expose radial holes in the poppet to an open position and to seal the radial holes in a closed position. A retainer collar is located on the opposite end of the control sleeve. Flow is permitted in a direction from the control sleeve to the retainer collar.
