Phototropic materials have a composition comprising a solid solution of a transitional metal halide and a polymeric plastics material the molecule of which has side groups to form the solid solution with said halide. The method described comprises depositing a thin uniform substantially dry film of a photochromic-bearing polymeric resin onto at least one planar surface of the synthetic plastic material, heating the plastic article and resin film substantially uniformly at temperatures near to but below the melting temperature of the photochromic substance for a time sufficient to transfer a photochromic amount of the photochromic material into the subsurface region of the plastic article, and thereafter removing the photochromic-lean resin film from the planar surface(s) of the plastic article.

A photochromic composition, which can function as an adhesive layer for bonding optical sheets made from a polycarbonate resin, may include a polyurethane-urea resin (A) obtained by reacting a polyol compound (A1), a polyisocyante compound (A2) that has two or more isocyanato groups in the molecule, and an amino-containing compound (A3) that contains two or more isocyanato-reactive groups in the molecule, with at least one of the isocyanato-reactive groups being an amino group; and a photochromic compound (B). 1. A photochromic composition , comprising:(A) a polyurethane-urea resin having an urea bond in a molecular chain; and(B) a photochromic compound.2. The photochromic composition as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said (A) polyurethane-urea resin is the polyurethane-urea resin obtained by reacting claim 1 ,(A1) at least one polyol compound selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol, polycarbonate polyol, polycaprolactone polyol, and polyester polyol,(A2) a polyisocyanate compound having two or more isocyanate groups in the molecule, and(A3) an amino group containing compound having two or more groups capable of reacting with the isocyanate group, and among these groups, at least one of the groups are amino group.3. The photochromic composition as set forth in claim 2 , wherein an amount ratio of the components (A1) claim 2 , (A2) and (A3) used when obtaining the polyurethane-urea resin satisfies n1: n2: n3=0.3 to 0.9:1:0.1 to 0.7 claim 2 ,wherein a total mol number of a hydroxyl group included in said component (A1) is n1, a total mol number of an isocyanate group included in said component (A2) is n2, and a total mol number of an amino group included in said component (A3) is n3.4. Systems and methods for ambient-light reduction in display systems with OLED or LCD based displays are disclosed. The base display is interfaced with an ambient-light-reducing (ALR) structure to form the display system. The ALR structure includes an ALR component. The ALR component can be a photochromic component or a fixed neutral-density component. The ALR structure attenuates incoming ambient light as well as outgoing redirected ambient light that is generated within the base display and is then emitted from the display system into the ambient environment. This increases the ambient contrast relative to that of the base display alone. 1. A process for producing a transparent photochromic polyurethane laminate , comprising:a) preparing a solvent casting solution by dissolving a solid thermoplastic polyurethane, at least one isocyanate polyurethane prepolymer, and at least one photochromic compound, in a solvent;b) casting the solution on a release liner film to form a cast film;c) evaporating the solvent from the cast film to a substantially dry state to form a photochromic polyurethane film;d) transfer-laminating the photochromic polyurethane film between two transparent resin sheets;e) curing the photochromic polyurethane film, thereby forming a photochromic polyurethane laminate.2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein step d) comprises transfer-laminating the photochromic polyurethane film between two transparent resin sheets through a sequential process.3. Thermochromic liquid crystal filters are fabricated by providing two polarizers oriented at offset polarity with respect to each other; providing alignment structures adjacent the inner surfaces of the polarizers; placing a plurality of spacers between the polarizers; and filling a space created by the spacers with a thermotropic liquid crystal that acts as a wave block in an isotropic state and acts to rotate the polarization of light in a nematic state. Alternatively, the filters can be created by encapsulating a thermochromic liquid crystal with a polymer material to form a flexible film and orienting the thermochromic liquid crystal in the polymer material to create a structure that functions as a thermochromic optical filter. Such filters can control the flow of light and radiant heat through selective reflection, transmission, absorption, and/or re-emission. The filters have particular application in passive or active light-regulating and temperature-regulating films, materials, and devices, and particularly as construction materials.
